This Era Of Mercedes Cars Can't Die Fast Enough - The Autopian I drive the coolest new Mercedes-Benz this side of a G-Class, and discover that Mercedes might be losing its way.

When people ask me if I don’t miss the sound of an internal-combustion engine now I have an EV, the answer is no β€” because the last IC car I had that made a nice noise, I sold in 2006 (Alfa 156 V6 😭). Current IC cars use resonators and even speakers to make noise, and honestly, what is the point?

Yes, hello, is that God? Yeah, hi. I have a complaint. You gave me this brain that’s designed for finding berries and avoiding lions and now people are β€˜just circling back’ to see if we can β€˜move the needle’ on β€˜key initiatives’? NONE of those things are berries.

That, or something like that, is my worry if this situation goes on much longer, enough that people try to restore some semblance of normal service. A tanker getting hit while trying to get through the Strait is to obvious scenario, but what else could go wrong?

Oh no, they’ve copied the monochrome flag thing from the US now?
At least that’s one thing our local lot literally can’t adopt; three stripes of grey-white-grey matches too many countries!

Plain old search works *better* in many cases. Sometimes β€œ0 results found” is exactly what I want, not a confidently-delivered analogue of what a result might look like if it existed (which it doesn’t).

I feel like we're forgetting that ctrl+f still exists and works really well... simply because a bunch of shills want us to put money in their AI boondoggle.

Here's my idea about writing:

If you hate to write, don't write.

And here's my idea about reading:

If you can't read, STFU about writing.

cannot stress enough that "separate the art from the artist" was meant for private individuals reconciling the art they love with its flawed creators and not meant for the ceo of a company driving a dump truck of money up to a bigot's front porch

Yeah, real mystery why people don’t have more kids, given how expensive they are β€” especially three of them.

Quite apart from the gender thing, Italy is the home of the overly-elaborate coffee order, as per this classic piece of animation: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcAw...

This is the time of chaos, where half my recurring meetings move by an hour while the other half don’t, depending on which side of the Atlantic the meeting was created on. Three weeks of this β€” just long enough for the rebound to be chaotic too!

Old sysadmins would say β€œmy systems are perfect, it’s the users who are the problem; after all, nobody complains when the users aren’t there!”
The thing is, we meant it as a joke.

The hard water thing? Yeah, we have very hard water here too, so we put in a building-wide water softener, and you can literally see the difference inside the pot.

But more seriously, why are you not drinking Turkish-style coffee? When it’s made with good ingredients, I actually prefer it, but I haven’t taken the leap to getting set up to make it at home.

That, and I do wonder whether the resulting coffee would be different (less fully expressed) than if the water had come up to temperature more gradually? But I just had my post-prandial coffee and can’t be arsed to make another pot to run the experiment.

Caffè con la Moka: gli errori da evitare Preparare un buon caffè con la Moka può sembrare semplice e scontato: sono, invece, molte le cattive abitudini a cui dovremmo prestare attenzione.

The Bialetti company, who should know, specifically recommends room-temperature water: www.bialetti.com/it_it/ispira...

The ones with decent range are still heavy because of the battery. My non-SUV EV is a literal ton heavier than the IC car it replaced. Admittedly I went up a size (the whole reason for the swap is that the old car could no longer comfortably fit the kids and all their clobber) but still: a ton.

I own a 12-cup moka pot, and it is indeed a bit of a faff β€” and takes ages to boil. I don’t use it daily, though, because I don’t have 11 friends visit on a daily basis! Speaking as an Italian, 12 cups in a day is still an eyebrow-raising amount, and in a sitting?!? Also it’d get cold…

07.03.2026 11:47 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, but there’s still traffic congestion and accidents, not to mention pollution from the tyres β€” both exacerbated by the additional weight of the things. An EV is better than the equivalent IC vehicle, but not as good as no car at all.

Doesn’t this just boil down to a gambit to make countries in the region unwilling to host US bases? β€œWe said we’d only bomb the countries which attacked us, and indeed, we have been attacked from all of those countries!” I doubt that would do much in the short term, but in their shoes, why not try?

That’s my current preferred loophole too. But I remember reading a book where the space colonists had to pack up and move further out before their emissions shell would reach Earth…

On the open road, maybe, but in city centres with narrow streets crammed in between tall buildings β€” like, for instance, the street out front β€” an EV is *locally* far better than internal combustion. A bike would be better yet, of course, or the bus, which the city is also converting to EVs.

United Airlines to permanently ban flyers who don't use headphones United Airlines are permanently banning flyers who don't use headphones, according to their updated contract of carriage.

I don’t say this often, but well done United! Of course this is only a first step toward my (and @andrewmueller.bsky.social ’s) ultimate preferred policy, in which offenders are ejected into the stratosphere. www.nme.com/news/music/u... #travel

This is a rare case where the TV series takes very substantial liberties with the source material, and ends up being much, much better for it.
