The Era of Tape is upon us, at last!

HPC Architecture Ronin, currently at Nvidia. ex-MSFT, but forever a Crayon. I am proud of my home state (MN) and you will hear about it. All posts (especially the dumb ones) reflect my own positions and not that of my employer.
The Era of Tape is upon us, at last!
Yeah, it's 100% at the cabinet level but not the server level.
I got to visit the early access system for NERSCβs upcoming Doudna supercomputer. A TALL order of GB200s. Surprisingly noisy.

R.I.P. Mike Flynn, processor architect and professor.
One of the designers of the awesome IBM 360 model 91.
As hybrid #HPC + #AI + #Quantum workflows become more prevalent, orchestration of complex systems is becoming a key component of successful deployment. Looking forward to accelerating these capabilities for the open-source community.
I wrote up my notes from #SC25. Have a look: blog.glennklockwood.com/2025/12/sc25...
Iβll keep picking away at the editing, but would love to hear more from others about what stood out to them. I wasnβt at the conference itself as much this years as in the past, so I know I missed a lot.

You're right, it's not dead! π
Ozaki does not replace FP64. It just makes DGEMM faster. Why is that bad?
That was the best analogy, though!

Hey #SC25 - we have a surprise for you...
Reminds me of Seattle in 2011. Didn't want to be a vendor in the "kid's table" hall.
Same. Not even close.
My 13yo showed me this passage in a book he was reading the other day. My response: "yeah, I've got one of those (blades) in my office". π
Yeah, this has been a go-to for years. Becoming especially important lately trying to find facts in the AI hype cycles.

The only office in the Twin Cities was for educational software and Office trainings, last I looked.
That would have been super valuable
The extra fun trivia is that I posted that message while sitting at the project kick-off meeting in Tokyo. :-)
That's a DFMA target number. Not GEMM.
To be chosen to participate in the design of the next iteration is a massive honor for us.
Through this partnership, we aim to develop a scientific discovery ecosystem based on the full integration of simulation and AI. We hope this work will benefit not only Japan, but also researchers worldwide.
Those who have been around #HPC a while know the historical significance (and probably the names) of Japan's flagship supercomputers. They always push the boundaries of technology, but in ways that are driven uniquely by the needs of Japan.

Those numbers were from their feasibility study and not necessarily where the design will land.
Not enough parallelism to saturate either.
For some reason, my three day weekends don't produce things like this...
Just confirming - despite the best efforts of the Minnesota Twins front office, I was *not* traded to Philidelphia this week. #Twins
Congrats, Glenn! Hope you enjoy the new gig! π₯³

I, too, was once highlighted by DCD once on a move (to Azure).
Enjoy the ego stroke π
This is a well-known Minnesota-ism, so I've been polluted from birth.
If it makes you feel better, it bugs the heck out of my wife.
