If you want it to be sparse, I think it’s binary search best case.
If you can limit size and quantize/snap values then you could linearize it into a fixed-sampled array and then have direct O(1) lookup.

There's so much outside pressure to peel the hard rinds away and make your game fruit as broadly accessible as possible, even in the indie space. Sometimes you do just have to ignore the voice of the Product and give the Game the shape it wants.
