Controlling Episode 1 Racer on the screen with two N64 controllers in my hands in the foreground

For #throwbackthursday here's a good retrogaming PSA:
You can use a cheat code (RRDUAL) on the N64 version of Episode 1 Racer to control it like the arcade cabinet with a seperate analog control for each hand/engine!
(It's actually super hard like this though! ๐Ÿ˜…)

One more thing about Hori's Super Game Boy Commander controller for SNES / Super Famicom that I find worthy of comment: it has the longest cable I've seen on a controller released in Japan. Typically they were notoriously short!

It's also interesting that the Super Game Boy and the Japanese-exclusive Super Game Boy 2 have different clock speeds from one another (SGB2 was accurate to the original Game Boy) and so the Speed button on this controller results in two different reduced playback speeds depending on which SGB it is

The Super Gameboy Commander controller from Hori let's you control features on the Super Gameboy that you can't access any other way.
Such as slowing down the game speed!
To accomplish this, when set to SGB mode it sends a special input macro within 25ms. Only possible with this gamepad.

I built my "Game Man" a few years ago (a consolised GBA) and bought a "Super Gameboy Commander" to play it with.
It's a controller by Hori with a unique Gameboy-inspired configuration and special features for use on Super Gameboy!

The trend of modern developers releasing games on vintage hardware will always amaze me.

There's also obviously Earthion for Genesis, Namco put Pac-Man CE on NES, there are so many recent examples and I love it !

Heh, I understand the confusion
It's not what it looks like.
I re-shelled an FX Pak Pro (which DOES have a real time clock, btw) into a "Nintendo Power" flash cart for funzies.
I indicated this in the ALT text for the images as well.

Of course the service is gone, but with it's bios and a cart with a real-time clock, you can get a good sense of what it was once like!

There was no women's cut t-shirts for the now-defunct, once-prolific developer Hudson Soft whom I love.
So I paid to have one printed!

Maybe most famous for Bomberman, the bee in their logo is named Hachisuke, and the name "Hudson" comes from a train!

This was an unexpected but welcome thing to wake up to! Quake running natively on the Analogue Pocket!
Definitely a bit choppy at times and with low-res textures and questionable audio, but it's still super rad.
It also supports the link cable for LAN play!

The top of the two Virtual Boy stands, the old one on the right showing the two metal "bumps" I mentioned, compared to the bottom of the new VB accessory which has no spot for the "bump" though you can see where they WOULD be

The new Virtual Boy stands lack the metal bumps to align with guide holes because there are no such holes in the new VB.
This means the new stand works with the old Virtual Boy, but the old stand won't work with the new one.
(Interestingly you can see where the holes WOULD be on the new accessory)

18.02.2026 17:27 ๐Ÿ‘ 12 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Interestingly, only in one direction! I can personally confirm I've attached my OG VB to the new stand, but the old stand can't mount to the new VB because there are guide holes that are missing!

New Switch VB accessory with it's lenses/filter removed (left) old VB with it's visor/faceplate removed (right)

New Switch VB accessory with it's lenses/filter removed (left) old VB with it's visor/faceplate removed (right)

To clarify what I mean when I say the visor isn't removable:
On the original VB the faceplate with the foam on it pops off leaving the lenses in place (system on the right)
This is a common piece to be missing, but the way the lenses pop off on the new VB (left) is different and not interchangeable

17.02.2026 23:24 ๐Ÿ‘ 11 ๐Ÿ” 1 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

There are confusing words around this. I mean like the face plate the whole section with the foam and lenses used to be a separate piece you would remove. This plate is no longer easily popped-off, and therefor cannot be used with an original unit

Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild both already feature a stereoscopic 3D "VR" mode by default, so it was fun to test the Virtual Boy accessory and see a 3D polygonal Mario in red on my VB in 2026!

The stands are just about identical, but there are some changes to the design around the nose, and the visor is also no longer removable.

The theory is that the JP market got the copies of the game that were intended for NA release
