art by Jean-Honore Fragonard (1767)
In October 1888, Gauguin arrived in Arles in southern France, where Vincent van Gogh was already staying. Throughout the autumn, the two artists lived and worked together. Tension arose and grew between them, leading to the dramatic crisis when van Gogh cut off part of his ear after a vicious quarrel. In his landscapes from Arles, such as this one, Gauguin depicts nature as decorative fields of colour without any illusion of depth. Some sections are enigmatic – note, for instance, the shadow cast by the dog in the corner!

I'm enjoying Leighton Pugh's audiobook of 'The Sorrows of Young Werther'. He uses the 1864 translation by R. Dillon Boylan, which captures Goethe's tone and diction to a surprising degree:

Victor Hugo, considéré comme le père du romantisme, est né le 26 février 1802. Il a su accepter les malheurs de sa vie pour les transformer en une expérience existentielle et saisir les valeurs et les nuances de l'âme humaine.

This fresco, "Marriage at Cana" by Giotto di Bondone, vividly captures the biblical scene where Jesus performs his first miracle of turning water into wine. Painted in the Scrovegni Chapel, it showcases Giotto's innovative use of perspective and emotional expression, marking a significant moment in early Renaissance art.

Pastel is pigment in a stick—fragile, luminous, impossible to erase.
For the Impressionists, it was perfect for capturing fleeting sensations.
Monet used it to test perceptions too quick for oil.

“If I could write all my work again, I am convinced that I’d do it better, which is the healthiest condition for an artist. That’s why he keeps on working, trying again; he believes each time that this time he will do it, bring it off.” —William Faulkner buff.ly/3P8LBBu
