An old warehouse café in #Otaru, as if filled with a twinkling nightscape. Warm lights and quiet voices slow the passing of time.
A quiet night on the #Otaru Canal, with the lights held in the water
A beautiful winter morning in #Sapporo
Heavy snow in #Sapporo does little for one's ambition, yet even so I found myself pausing, perhaps even posing, here for a moment.
A view from the hotel room, perhaps not remarkable, but everyday life in a northern town, as it is.
#Mombetsu
Now you can see just how big that crab claw statue is.
#Mombetsu
From the deck of the sightseeing icebreaker Garinko Go in the Sea of Okhotsk, there are no vast fields of drifting sea ice today, only small rounds of pancake ice, said by some to look like lotus leaves on a winter sea.

Frozen water, lifted ships, #Mombetsu Port in winter
The monument along a snow-covered path

I visited Okhotsk Tower again this year, an observation tower in the Sea of Okhotsk, ice-covered in winter, with a small aquarium and café inside.
#Mombetsu
February in #Mombetsu, for the third time, and once again this year I meet this iconic giant crab claw. I really should stand beside it for scale, but for now it is just the claw and me, with no one around to take our photo.

💡 Women represent about 1/3 of researchers, yet they remain underrepresented in scientific organizations. On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we launch a new report examining this gap: https://council.science/publications/towards-gender-equality-in-scientific-organizations/.

Above Lapland, Finland, winter snow spreads like a white carpet, the forests silent
It may be an ordinary and familiar tourist spot in the middle of the city, nothing remarkable, I reckon, yet a view I have always liked.

Thursday evening, a short organ concert at the Arctic Cathedral. Perhaps not enough to change much, but enough to give a foreigner a quiet sense of relief, if only for a moment.
#Tromsø
A small performance in the city square makes me pause, and offers a moment of delight.

At every election, I grow weary of the inhuman rhetoric that rings out so loudly. I may cry, but even so, I have no intention of giving up on thinking, or on speaking out.
One goes on living until one dies, after all.
I have now come to see just how effectively the collusion between capital and political power can shape collective perception and distort facts. Still, as someone entrusted by history with the right to vote, I believe I acted without shame.
An afternoon at my favourite café, with a slice of lemon cake, watching the snowploughs at work

Summer or winter in #Tromsø, the mountains beyond the fjord never quite let me go.
Walking across the bridge, the Arctic Cathedral slowly comes into view.
#Tromsø
The bridge and the Arctic Cathedral always remind me that I am in #Tromsø.
The reindeer were friendly and gentle. A quiet #Arctic moment.
