I love working with these colleagues on an editorial project (thanks, y'all!) and am excited at the prospect of more publishing, crediting, and re-using data in medieval humanities.
Then, peer review essays by Jeffrey Miner doi.org/10.1353/dph....
and Shawn Graham (@electricarchaeo.scholar.social.ap.brid.gy) show two very different reader responses to the dataset. doi.org/10.1353/dph....
The wonderful data section in the Fall 2025 ODFMS installment begins with the Datini Letter Collection Dataset introduction by Adam Franklin-Lyons and Pavel Oleinikov. doi.org/10.1353/dph....
The multi-part ODFMS "installment" begins w/ a preface to the series. doi.org/10.1353/dph....
The intro essay (βReview and Reuseβ) then articulates how humanities disciplines benefit from data-centric research & why datasets are a key research element to showcase and credit. doi.org/10.1353/dph....
Just launched: Open Datasets For Medieval Studies, a new annual installment in Digital Philology: A Journal of Medieval Cultures (Johns Hopkins Press) wherein scholars peer review research datasets. Section co-edited by @lauramorreale.bsky.social @jwtorg.bsky.social & me.

The current distribution of votes per category is a tad uneven and you can probably guess which categories are which!
A reminder that the 5 calls app (or website) has all the contact info handy for calling reps, and even has scripts for specific issues.
Also I forgot to say that if you win an award to go to Kzoo, there will be a waiver for DMSI participation fee AND a subsidized registration fee for the Congress!
Nominations are open for DH Awards 2025.
Anyone can nominate things that are #DigitalHumanities, available to voters, and updated in 2025. #DH
Nominations close 2026-02-26 and the only way something gets on the ballot. You only need to nominate something once.

Happy new mayor day to all who celebrate!
Here's to the potential that a new year brings.
Thanks! And congratulations on the book launch.
You know she's a Byzantine historian, right? It's also a good example of how history can help us think through lived experience of empire (as you aptly note) when applied to arts like fiction writing. Well-informed imagination is powerful.
+1 for Rhea being a great place to publish--humane, ethical, scholarly.

I will always, always be grateful for the nodding audience members in a panel or a class. There's something reassuring about that subtle nod when all is quiet.
Glad to hear you're currently safe and checking in with each other.

I've always like weather, and talking about the weather. Seems like the same genre as this!
Here I am. Once again. I'm out of archaeologists.
We matched 576 groups w/archaeologists, leaving 13 groups unmatched. This brings me pain! We've never run out of scientists like this before. 598 requests for one category is A LOT. But still.

Great new tool from Flickr foundation - the Data Lifeboat, to package up Flickr image collections and get them out of dodge quickly, with metadata and readmes. Speaking to urgency of portability of digital cultural heritage given current times. They need some testers to play and give feedback π
Michigan has some really touching shipwreck museums, including one on Beaver Island. I believe the SS Edmund Fitzgerald is commemorated in the museum on Whitefish Point.
Okay, you had me at that very first paragraph about the beach! (Looking forward to reading the whole thing).
I donβt know why this zoom hack didnβt occur to me until now, but if you have an activity where you want students/colleagues to call on each other/go around the virtual roomβe.g. when making introductionsβhave everyone raise their hand & then lower them when doneβno guessing as to who hasnβt gone
