Have any of my followers implemented a "flipped classroom" for an upper division Environmental Micro (or related) course? I am planning a re-work for my current class for next fall and considering a flipped modality.

Are you an early-career biologist or ecologist who would benefit from an invited seminar? Would you like to come to UMaine next fall or spring to give a talk? Leave a brief comment with some info about what you do. I'm co-hosting our seminar series again, and am filling out our rosters.

I NEED to tell you the story of Tae Heung “William” Kim.

He's a graduate student at Texas A&M where he's working on a vaccine for Lyme disease.

He's a *legal permanent resident* of the United States.

And he's been in ICE detention for 12 days & counting, transferred Tuesday to South Texas.

3. GREENHOUSE GASSES
Metabolic differences between “pits” (i.e., less water usage) and “tanks” (i.e., more water usage) indicate that methanogens more actively convert organic matter to methane in the more dilute wastewater in septic tanks.

2. PROPERTIES OF WASTEWATER
Differences in communities were related to volumes of water usage, properties of wastewater in containments (e.g., total organic carbon, total kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, pH), metrics of stabilization and metrics of dewatering performance.

1. CORE COMMUNITIES
There was a core community in Lusaka, with 104 of the 1,247 identified genera present in more than 90% of "pits" and "tanks". Community similarity was independent of time since last emptied, indicating stability of microbial communities over time.

Microbial community composition reflects water usage and storage conditions in a city-wide study of non-sewered wastewater (fecal sludge) Nearly half (46%) the world’s population is now served by non-sewered sanitation. In urban areas of low- and middle-income countries, this translates to onsite storage of wastewater in tanks and pits ...

We continue to learn more about the non-sewered sanitation systems that more than 3.5 billion people rely on... we cast a wide net across Lusaka, with 135 randomly selected containments (i.e., “pits” and “tanks” used to store wastewater, until it can be transported to treatment)

Los Angeles is multicultural. Angelenos understand how Mexicans who are 100% American can celebrate pride and freedom by waving Mexican flags.

We get it. Nothing can be more American than waving a flag representing your heritage.

No confederate flags, no fascist flags, all others are welcome.

Brutal. Seeing the US science budget cuts in terms of the fall in numbers of postdocs and postgrads really hammers home how utterly tragic this is. Unbelievable.

We'll also go over nuts and bolts stuff, like how to get in contact with our colleagues in middle and high schools (hint: talk to them early!), how to bridge the languages secondary and higher education, how to navigate ethics approval, and how to disseminate the lesson plans widely.

At the end of the workshop you'll have at least one 'nugget' for the core of a lesson plan or outreach activity, aligned to educational standards, which uses your real-world research as an engagement hook.

We'll support interested participants in continuing to flesh things out to a full activity.

Did you ever want to use your research to hook secondary school students on microbes and poo water?
I'm running a workshop at the upcoming #MeWe11 conference on finding relevant curriculum standards, combine them with your research to create learning objectives, and develop content around all that.

Just sent off my poster to the printers for #Microbio25 Things are getting real.

If you're at all interested in learning how you can turn your research into outreach for secondary schools (and YES, you can) I'll be in the Block A poster section (poster A303)

Fewer teachers signed up for Skype a Scientist this February than the last few Februarys. Could be lots of reasons for that, but ugh. Still bums me out. It's my responsibility to make sure we get people connected with science but teacher outreach is VERY hard. Once again I need to get creative.
