Protecting nature OUTWEIGHS profits from exploiting it. 75% of the time, nature is the better investment.
Sandy Lake is a vital economic asset.

Nova Scotia has <1% old-growth forest left. Some is right here at Sandy Lake, Bedford.
We also protect the new-growth forest, recovering from a 2013 clear-cut. It supports the watershed and will become old-growth one day.
Both are vital. Both need protection before it's too late.
#SaveSandyLake
Let's talk numbers. The proposed Sandy Lake park is a biodiversity haven:
✅ 117 bird species
✅ 24 Species At Risk/Concern
✅ Rare old-growth forest
This is one of HRM's last great refuges. We need housing, but not by destroying what we can't replace.
Speak up.

Sandy Lake's inconvenient truth:
Water quality is at a tipping point. Watershed development will trigger a domino effect, damaging the entire ecosystem.
Reject the fantasy of harmless lakeside building.
Tell your MLA: choose the right path, not the easy one.

After the open house, a quiet moment. 🍃

Today, just go enjoy your park. Breathe it in. Remember what we protect.

Let’s talk traffic!
The proposed development around Sandy Lake will make things much worse, especially along Hammonds Plains Rd.
People, air, water, and wildlife in the area would suffer as a result of the overloading of Hammonds Plains Road.

Development at Sandy Lake is unsustainable urban sprawl and comes at a very high cost to the environment, and the people. There is still time to send a clear message that we do need housing but NOT next to Sandy Lake.
Help us protect Sandy Lake by posting a Save Sandy Lake Sign on your property!

Fungi are vital for decomposing dead organic matter, recycling nutrients back into the soil and supporting new plant growth. With several hundred species of fungi in Nova Scotia you never know what you might find.
Here are some of the fungi species that have been found around Sandy Lake Park!

Blue and white text overlaid on an image of Sandy Lake in the HRM. Text reads: "Let’s build communities for people, not developers. That means: - Truly affordable housing - Building up, not sprawling out - Protecting wild spaces that clean air & water, store carbon and keep us healthy"
Blue and white text overlaid on an image of Sandy Lake in the HRM. Text reads: "how to fight back: - Download the toolkit (info in caption) - Write to your MLA and Premier Houston - Support local coalitions (Friends of BMBCL & Sandy Lake-Sackville River Regional Park Coalition) - Demand the removal of Sandy Lake & Highway 102 West Corridor from the SPA list"
Blue and white text overlaid on an aerial image of Sandy Lake in the HRM. Text reads: "No More Bull💩 Nova Scotians didn't ask for urban sprawl. Sandy Lake & Blue Mountain–Birch Cove Lakes are under threat."
Blue and white text overlaid on an aerial image of Sandy Lake in the HRM. Text reads: "location, location, location...Everyone knows that we need more housing. But where and how we build matters. Using Special Planing Areas (SPAs), the Houston government has fast-tracked massive proposed housing projects in two key wild areas: - Sandy Lake - Highway 102 West Corridor (next to Blue Mountain–Birch Cove Lakes)"
Blue and white text overlaid on an image of Sandy Lake in the HRM. Text reads: "a disaster for the environment...Development in these two areas would threaten crucial ecosystems. Sandy Lake: - Home to endangered Atlantic Salmon - 100+ bird species - Old growth forest, wetlands and critical habitat Blue Mountain–Birch Cove: - Mainland Moose habitat - Important lakes, wetlands and wildlife corridors - Space for recreation & connection to nature"
Blue and white text overlaid on an image of Sandy Lake in the HRM. Text reads: "...and it’s not great for people either. Both sites are outside the Urban Service Boundary. That means: - Expensive taxpayer-funded infrastructure - No public transit: fully car-dependent - More traffic congestion on major highways"
The Province wants to turn Sandy Lake & BMBCL into massive housing projects. These forests are critical to communities and biodiversity. We need housing, but we need to build it where it makes sense.
