I think and hope that attitude will change fairly quickly. Once people accept that 20 limits actually make driving more tolerable I think they will relax. But changing habits is hard - people even talk about 30 being a "natural" speed.

I think part of this is fear, "they look so vulnerable" but instead of empathy you get anger, "why should I look after them?!" As if their presence is an extra burden on driving

But is their response rational? People have been conditioned to see cyclists as being at fault, they are a different tribe, so when anything goes wrong they blame them. There is no logic, but the feeling is very real especially because it is based on ignorance.

Drivers offend at a higher rate too. I'm not excusing anything, just giving context, and pointing out the irrationality of cyclist hatred.

Well that's the jockey wheels cleaned, now to do the actual job of replacing the chain and cassette ... What's that bicycle repair gods, a cassette removal tool is not the same as a freewheel removal tool? But they look the SAME!

But I do agree with not blaming victims of exploitative working practices.

It hasn't. It has been created by sustained messaging from the motoring lobby. It existed before delivery riders switched from mopeds. All it requires is people not understanding confirmation bias and ignoring all the rule breaking drivers.

That is bad cycling, not pavement cycling. Pavement cycling is fine, we allow the least aware cyclists, young children, to do it. We allow them because we fear drivers, so there is no reason to limit pavement cycling acceptance to children.

You could, but all that does is make you twice as wide. Riding a bike at walking pace is fine.

Why do you not see the far greater danger from drivers? What is it about them that makes so many people excuse their bad behaviours?

You will have been present when orders of magnitude more drivers did those things. They are what makes you think cycling is a risk.

Which is to say as a cyclist it isn't a bad way of thinking, but when drivers assume cyclists should act like that we have a serious problem.
