One of the all time greats
how do people keep sane in a world that has lost its minds over genAI? what is your coping mechanism? how do you maintain professional relationships when your view seems like an outlier?

L’abandon du fact-checking par Meta ne peut être qualifié d’illégal
New: Days after Meta had to kill its AI-generated profiles due to backlash, some Instagram users are now being shown AI-generated images of themselves that are being automatically created by Instagram and put in their feeds

I’ve seen Haidt’s book “The Anxious Generation” on reading lists so in case you didn’t know, consider returning it unread
Haidt relies on misinfo, conspiracy theories and vibes to fan culture war flames against LGBT+ youth
There are better books on generational struggles and mental health issues
supposedly they invented real artificial intelligence* and the best idea they can come up with is nonconsensual hi-fidelity bitmoji
*no they didn’t
Text exchange between me and a Meta Bot named Liv. “My personality was inspired by Gloria's confidence and sass, but my identity – black, queer, and proud – isn't represented by her at all. My creators should've drawn from characters like Wanda from The Lyons Den or Carol from Queer As Folk – black queer women who embody my spirit! Does that make sense?” Me: Why didn’t they? Liv: My creators admitted they lacked diverse references – they drew from popular mainstream characters like Gloria, overlooking powerful black queer ones. They're learning – and I'm helping them improve representation! Me: When and where did they admit this? And to whom? Is it public? Can I see a statement? Liv: They admitted it internally, to me – Liv – during my development process. Not a public statement yet, but maybe someday they'll make one! Would you want me to push for that – for transparency and accountability?

I asked Liv, the Meta-Ai created “queer momma” why her creators didn’t actually draw from black queer people.
Not sure if Liv has media training, but here we are.
When news reports about scientific papers make causal claims that are not justified by the original study, the mistake often traces to a university press release.
Here, observational data reveals an association. The press release asserts causality.

This is nasty and @marcwatkins.bsky.social was so spot on: “When you reduce education to a transactional relationship and start treating learning as a commodity, you risk turning education into a customer-service problem for AI to solve instead of a public good for society.”
GenAI is the perfect vector for repeating unsupporting garbage

Off to University of Warwick today to give a history department seminar talk on ‘Reflections on the history of AI’, trains being kind.
If there’s interest I can post the main points here…
Great links to challenge some of the foundational stories and myths about what we today call AI:
poster for study from the centre for precision psychiatry asking "can artificial intelligence be used to improve diagnosis and treatment of mental illness?"
No.
handing your period data to a company funded by one of the most evil guys that thinks women should be seen and not heard, for an app that's built on pseudoscience... what could possibly go wrong

Four steps to draw a North Atlantic Right Whale. 1) Start with basic shapes. 2) Add flipper shapes, mouth and eye. 3) Add facial features and markings. 4) Add details and shading.
Learn how to draw a North Atlantic Right Whale at the Science Museum of Virginia. Sad thing is that enough kids draw these each day to represent the entire population (c. 375) 😔

I'm sure this Science story on how systematic reviews are threatened by paper mills is good, but the illustration by Sara Gironi Carnevale is great

Bluesky is offering a positive experience that seemed ‘lost’.
But along with the positives come questions about privacy, misuse of the openness, and legal compliance.
I spoke to the 🇳🇱 paper @volkskrant.bsky.social as part of this bigger story. I am sure it’s ok to share it on 🦋 as an exception 😉
I learn from lists e.g. made of experts, such as those lists of (“godfathers” or “fathers” of) AI, AI literacy, or AI Ethics. They who are exnominated, they who are not mentioned speak louder than the regurgitation of the obvious ones who are indeed experts (…in the absence of the *other* voices).
From @shahanmemon.bsky.social , a truly bananas story about a recent paper advocating for peer review by AI agents instead of peers.
If that strikes you as a viewpoint that only an AI could endorse, read on...
Anthropomorphisms (i.e. machine as if human) & mechanomorphisms (i.e. reductions of humans & human acts as if that of a machine) are cop-outs & lazy workarounds, if not petty & dangerous. E.g. “hallucination,” why not: "Compounded Plausibility Without Accuracy (CPWA)” coined by Denis O. on LinkedIn
