Chaos moves fast, good data science moves slow
Why slowing down actually accelerates impact
In data science, speed can be tricky to master.
Careful, deliberate work moves faster in the ways that matter π’, while frantic work π collapses, achieving nothing.

Iβm a 1-dan Go player with a decade of exerpeince; here is what the game has taught me about myself
Go is an ancient strategy board game and is at once an elegant, enigmatic and harsh teacher.
#Go / #Baduk is an ancient and mysterious game. After a decade of playing, itβs shaped not just how I think but who I am.
It taught me to challenge assumptions, develop aggression, and accept that mastery is impossible.

Why Bayesian methods very useful for business decision making
Bayesian methods are very useful in a business context, but they are heavily underutilised
Businesses often make decisions while facing uncertainty and limited data. Bayesian methods offer a principled way to update beliefs and reduce risk. π―

Abstract for our newly accepted article at PRQ: Signed, Sealed, Counted? An Experimental Study of Mail-in Ballot Signature Verification
Election officials are increasingly reliant on computer algorithms to help verify mail-in ballots. But does the use of algorithmic tools impact votersβ confidence in elections? My colleagues and I explored this (and more) in our new piece for PRQ. Here are some key highlights: 1/5π§΅

Yeah, itβs unfortunate that I relied on it as heavily as I did during uni. It was just what everyone was doing and in the mid-2010s spaced repetition was the big hype.
Generally memorisation has narrow use and should be used very sparingly for its high cost/benefit ratio.

A lot of the anxiety surrounding Bayesian stats is the loss of objectivity.
But often we haven't discussed on what "objectivity" would look like, when we don't then how can we expect our analysis to be convincing?

It's only recently that I understand that this is a understated benefit of Bayesian stats.
Perhaps it's a lot of effort for problems that don't matter that much, but if there is sufficient anxiety surrounding a decision then being able to explain how you get to your conclusions is vital.

I think this is an important question beyond just research. An important thing is that LLMs are word predictors and so isnβt a robust βway of knowingβ and understanding both of these is key to using it well.
Everything must be verified, driven by and passed through you, this maximises benefit.

Thatβs quite interesting because I mentioned in other post how when you learn philosophy of science then youβll find that lots of seemingly simple questions are quite difficult to answer.
Iβm a bit confused as to why youβre so interested in this, isnβt it a bit esoteric?
