Deliver Value First, Get Clever Later Orgs want dashboards not disruption

Data science is often… tedious work. πŸ˜…

We knew this going in, but here’s the thing: don't make it sexy until you can nail the boring 100%. πŸš€

Chaos moves fast, good data science moves slow Why slowing down actually accelerates impact

In data science, speed can be tricky to master.

Careful, deliberate work moves faster in the ways that matter 🐒, while frantic work πŸ‡ collapses, achieving nothing.

Learn about why slowing down is the smartest way to move forward in my latest article.

How to stop your LLM from glazing you Prompting for Discomfort

The problem isn’t the bot πŸ€–, It’s the questions you’re asking it.

I wrote about how to stop turning LLMs into digital sycophants,
the key is to get better at disagreeing with yourself.

How to Use AI Without Letting It Think for You Keeping Your Edge in the Age of LLMs

If you let AI do all the thinking, you’re outsourcing your mind 🧠, and that's no fun.

Learn the 4 principles I use while interacting with LLMs.

πŸš— Stay in the driver’s seat

🎯 Give it for small tasks
🧱 Provide scaffolding

What I’ve learned about my Adult-Diagnosed ADHD from being on meds A big challenge with any neurodivergence, is struggling to understand how present it is

It's funny how I've had ADHD my whole life, but only in the recent years that I've come to understand it better, which I would like to share to raise awareness.

I’m a 1-dan Go player with a decade of exerpeince; here is what the game has taught me about myself Go is an ancient strategy board game and is at once an elegant, enigmatic and harsh teacher.

#Go / #Baduk is an ancient and mysterious game. After a decade of playing, it’s shaped not just how I think but who I am.

It taught me to challenge assumptions, develop aggression, and accept that mastery is impossible.

Why Bayesian methods very useful for business decision making Bayesian methods are very useful in a business context, but they are heavily underutilised

Businesses often make decisions while facing uncertainty and limited data. Bayesian methods offer a principled way to update beliefs and reduce risk. 🎯

Learn why more companies should embrace this approach in my new article: sthornewillve.medium.com/why-bayesian...

These are the most important data science skills I learned since boot camp Important lessons that you won’t learn online but while on the job

When I transitioned from chemistry to data science 7 years ago, I thought mastering the technical side was the key to success πŸŽ“πŸ“Š but I was still missing on some key skills.

I break down the most important things I’ve learned in my latest Medium article:

Abstract for our newly accepted article at PRQ: Signed, Sealed, Counted? An Experimental Study of Mail-in Ballot Signature Verification

Election officials are increasingly reliant on computer algorithms to help verify mail-in ballots. But does the use of algorithmic tools impact voters’ confidence in elections? My colleagues and I explored this (and more) in our new piece for PRQ. Here are some key highlights: 1/5🧡

I mean this for general learning, since I realise the context for this post was coding where it’s almost redundant because of how code tends to change.

31.12.2024 16:05 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, it’s unfortunate that I relied on it as heavily as I did during uni. It was just what everyone was doing and in the mid-2010s spaced repetition was the big hype.

Generally memorisation has narrow use and should be used very sparingly for its high cost/benefit ratio.

31.12.2024 16:05 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

It does take real strength to look on the positives, it’s a practice that I’ve been working on.

Although there’s also something to be said about being content even when there’s no good news and to be working to be the change you want to see in the world.

A lot of the anxiety surrounding Bayesian stats is the loss of objectivity.

But often we haven't discussed on what "objectivity" would look like, when we don't then how can we expect our analysis to be convincing?

28.12.2024 16:57 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

It's only recently that I understand that this is a understated benefit of Bayesian stats.

Perhaps it's a lot of effort for problems that don't matter that much, but if there is sufficient anxiety surrounding a decision then being able to explain how you get to your conclusions is vital.

28.12.2024 16:50 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I.e. Your consciousness and representation of the world fills in the gaps left by a system that doesn’t have this. (And biases will leak in as a result.)

I think this is an important question beyond just research. An important thing is that LLMs are word predictors and so isn’t a robust β€œway of knowing” and understanding both of these is key to using it well.

Everything must be verified, driven by and passed through you, this maximises benefit.

I’m not sure the evidence is out there and even if it did what would it change in your life?

Regardless of the answer, you’re here. Me too.

You’re not going to find this answer through philosophy of science though. There are only more questions for you and not many answers.

21.12.2024 23:44 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

That’s quite interesting because I mentioned in other post how when you learn philosophy of science then you’ll find that lots of seemingly simple questions are quite difficult to answer.

I’m a bit confused as to why you’re so interested in this, isn’t it a bit esoteric?

21.12.2024 12:44 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Most people don't have a way to keep those notes to hand when they're needed.

Everyone else in the comments are right when they say that just making them is good for your learning, but I've found that there is a lot of untapped potential within them.
