One of the most impressive gas actions, IMO, of the war was the French flooding of the Aillette Valley in the lead up to the Malmaison operation in 1917. Greatly hampered to flat out shut down communications and logistics to the Chemin des Dames for several days.

By 1918 most armies are shooting at least a 20-25% gas mix, Bruchmuller, the officer behind the fireplans for the Spring Offensives, liked to push it up to 33%+.

Yeah, this isn't even a 12 Day War situation where you could squint and see a path for Israel to continue on its own, and even there it stopped. This is the big war Netanyahu has been begging D.C. for since the early 2000's and there's a reason he didn't launch it until he finally got support.

Mosaic defense isn't complete chaos - the Iranians are probably going to replace Khamenei by the end of this weekend and Pezeshkian is still there. If the order goes out to cut it out, the shooting will stop.

I cannot describe how badly you have ruined my day with this.

Yeah, there's no way Israel continues without us in this. This whole operation has been the big one they've been demanding from the US since the early 2000's and the reason they haven't launched it until now is that they can't sustain it on their own.

Yeah, the people who were *truly* horny for it was the class of Prussian elites just under him.

Believe me, I'm all for letting the fentystanis burn. But Hormuz getting shut down is also fucking global fertilizer markets right as we enter planting season in the areas of the world that provide most global calories. That's too much collateral damage.

I know everyone wants to make fun of this. But holy crap everyone just run with it and no one let the tyrant know that this isn't how things work. I prefer gas to not be $27 per gallon.

"Key Indian natsec player directly tied to the Indian government" probably is a solid shot re: reliability of what were the rules for a fairly important natsec showcase event hosted by India.

This isn't some weird commie intellectualism. The UK during the Falklands, the US during Desert Storm I and II, the fucking *Russians* during Ukraine all clearly designated exclusion zones and provided clear notice which areas were to be considered active combat zones.

It doesn't just look and feel Pearl Harbor, it is Pearl Harbor under customary law. The officers involved in this are just lucky that there's zero shot of them ever being prosecuted. The clear expectations are either: (a) you declare war - it's shoot on sight - or (b) you declare an exclusion zone.

06.03.2026 18:24 ๐Ÿ‘ 9 ๐Ÿ” 1 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The whole reason the concept of the Maritime Exclusion Zone has emerged under customary international law is specifically to address the issue that, given that declarations of war have declined in use, there's an expectation for an attacking power to state where it's going to be shoot on site.

Buddy Pearl Harbor was specifically judged to be a war crime and people were convicted for planning, launching, and participating in it.

It's just pure DoD decadence. The kind of thing that no one would have signed off on before we had 25+ years of American military leadership being defined by people who got used to thinking that war is dropping bombs on AKs and sandals fellahin and can't think that it someday might not be that way.

06.03.2026 17:59 ๐Ÿ‘ 29 ๐Ÿ” 5 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

In the Falklands there was at least a zone of exclusion and you could directly argue (correctly) that the Belgrano was actively taking part in combat activities as part of the Argentinian naval counter-offensive.

06.03.2026 17:56 ๐Ÿ‘ 19 ๐Ÿ” 3 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Except that we're not even officially in a state of hostilities. The official position from the sinking of the Dena is that you can randomly just start shooting at a state and suddenly all of said state's assets become valid targets wherever they may be in the world.

What's infuriating is that there already was a leader elected to significantly curtail Iranian adventurism - Pezeshkian - and instead both us and Israel have done everything possible to sabotage any hopes of him being able to accomplish those goals.

I still can't believe that there was zero CA Bar scrutiny over the napkin "winner's fee" deal made during the wrap up party for Twitter.

This is just indigenous British Indian Army (which used to cover the Gulf and Egypt!) ways of knowing.

Even in older eras, the only thing that made WWII style home front AD possible is draining every available spare human being to man them, including women, disabled soldiers, the elderly, ect.

06.03.2026 15:46 ๐Ÿ‘ 6 ๐Ÿ” 1 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The problem with all of the above, and one of the reasons that a lot of nations abandoned, or phased out, gun based AD, is that it consumes an absolutely ungodly amount of manpower. Modern militaries usually have more money to spend than manpower to work with.

Pretty far from it. Definitely a Turkish vassal. But the default war games setting for a long time in the Army has been defending Not!Azerbaijan vs. Russia or Iran.

People really do not understand just how much damage LLMs enable. The key tool for limiting bad behavior by pro ses in the legal system is the time required to do so.

If they hit the Sangachal terminal in Azerbaijan the global economy enters a "fun" place.

This is not technically a war crime; an unarmed combatant is not hors de combat (out of the action) sufficiently to make targeting them illegal. And had the IRIS Dena returned home it would have immediately armed up and joined the fight.

But blowing up an unarmed ship vulnerable because of a joint

Particularly one which is likely to be prolonged given that the global fertilizer supply is getting cut off during planting season.

So AI evangelists have to actively work to try and force people to accept the slop machine as "the future" because the only future where they are not punished for cranking out slop is one where slop has become the default.

06.03.2026 12:51 ๐Ÿ‘ 19 ๐Ÿ” 2 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think a major reason why AI evangelists are so pushy is that it's a prisoner's dilemma. White collar work (generally) operates on a high quality for high quality trade. Slop chuggers want to provide low quality. But that doesn't work unless everyone else agrees to accept it.
