The Liberal brand is still pretty strong in Ontario. The province has enormous challenges. Doug Ford is not going to be Premier forever. Every would-be candidate has their reasons for not running, in many cases very valid personal ones, but cumulatively it's stunning.

It continues to surprise me, having covered the Ontario Liberal Party during its McGuinty/Wynne-era dominance, how resistible its leadership race is proving to would-be candidates. Mike Crawley, who seemed to have some (relative) buzz, is the latest to take a pass. www.linkedin.com/posts/activi...

The slight irony here is that while the ideological shift is pretty clear, the jury is still out on whether he's actually made government much more competent. But agreed that the businesslike, strong-hand approach he projects is probably the biggest factor in terms of political success.

This is a profound continental divide. Canadians overwhelmingly view other Canadians, even those unlike them, as being good people. Americans, more than any other country, view their neighbours and fellow citizens as bad people. Anti-Americanism flourishes in the United States

Which is completely impossible, because the people they have at the table are not newcomers to this subject.

Setting aside that renewables are now driving energy costs down, it's incredibly cynical to ascribe that motive to governments that care about climate change, even if you disagree with their priorities.

From Poilievre's speech today: "Net-zero policies drove energy and food costs up and paycheques down, all to fill the pockets of green grifters."

I chafed at the Bills promo game with the Argos, but at least that purportedly had a purpose around growing football (and celebrating Doug Flutie). Why is MLSE forcing an American team down the throats of Canadian fans of a different sport?

(Yes, the situation has evolved somewhat since Saturday. But tonally, this is a bit closer to what I would've guessed we'd see at the outset.)

I mean, none of these things are life and death, but to me leaving home to darkness for months on end seems less desirable than changing the clocks twice a year.

Yeah, I often am. I can't speak for all kids, but I find mine fairly adaptable if, say, we travel to a different time zone. I honestly don't recall the clock change ever having a significant impact on them. I think dragging them to school in nighttime darkness would make mornings harder, though.

Yeah, I can never understand why people get worked up about the clock changing by an hour a couple of times a year. But this would really bother me.

Any country that doesn’t produce its own oil keeps getting more and more incentive to accelerate the shift to renewables, even if it couldn’t care less about climate change.

We live in a world in which its entirely possible that Iran negotiations failed because people involved bet the under.

Among my many questions would be why his government responded so much more enthusiastically to this than to the Venezuela strike, when both involved targeting a terrible regime with no known plan for what next. Might help us understand Carney’s compass (or not).

What I still wonder is how he responded with such immediate certainty on this one, relative to the slower and far more tentative response on Venezuela. Clearly there was more confidence about where to stand on this one - it would be good to know why that is exactly.

Canada’s immediate support for the Iran attack, and the surprise with which I think many are responding to it, is kind of a reminder that despite our Prime Minister’s oratory prowess, the philosophy behind our foreign policy is still rather hard to pinpoint.

I was referring more to keeping governments of both those countries at arm's length (and accepting some trade consequences) in response to their actions, which was certainly more the case a year or two ago than now.

It's been a while since that was the fun part of Queen West, but I now also spend a lot of time being nostalgic for the West Queen West of 15-20 years ago.

Obviously, the economic relationships (and concerns) with those countries are quite different. But either you believe we should be focusing on getting those relationships right, and downgrading the other stuff because of new global realities, or you don't.

I continue to struggle with how anyone can be gung-ho on prioritizing trade over human rights/foreign interference worries with India and against doing so with China (or vice versa).

The bit where he randomly fires a machine gun into the air, everyone looks scared and he comes back with “That’s what I thought!” is a perfect bit of satire that’s popped into my head countless times.

I hasten to add that after a couple weeks in Mexico this winter (one work, one vacation), I’m very eager to explore more of it in the coming years. And I imagine it will quickly go back to being pretty safe for tourists in most areas, though sadly less so for many folks living off the tourist path.

FWIW, I spent two weeks there this winter (Mexico City and Playa del Carmen, the latter with my family) and my takeaway was that those places are very safe unless you do something stupid. I think the odds are it’s the same again by (well before) next winter.
