Women of Wardsend Cemetery Welcome to the Women of Wardsend Cemetery audio trail. Nestled on a wooded hillside, with the River Don flowing below, is a unique Victorian Cemetery, the final resting place of nearly 30,000 people…

Happy International Women's Day!

Most of the stories associated with our working class Victorian cemetery tend to be male dominated. Our Women of Wardsend Cemetery self-guided audio trail sheds light on the lives of 9 women buried at Wardsend.

A little friend joined us, singing quietly as he or she hopped around our feet looking for tasty treats.

Thank you to everyone who came to our volunteer session. We cut back the large rhododendron, controlling an invasive species, and improving sight lines, exposed some of the walls near the site of the Sexton's house and removed brambles and ivy to allow the bluebells room to flourish.

Jonathan and Mary had 13 children. Three adult children (2 married, 1 unmarried) are buried in a grave in Walkley Cemetery. Another married son is buried in the same cemetery, but in an unmarked grave. One married daughter is buried in Massachusetts. One adult son Luther can't be traced after 1871.

Oliver is remembered on the screen wall at City Road Cemetery and his grave is one of the 16 at Wardsend which we found and marked with wooden crosses in November 2020.
We are disappointed that @cwgc.bsky.social turned down our request that commemoration of these 16 men be returned to Wardsend.

Yellow brain, golden jelly fungus, yellow trembler or witch's butter. Take your pick.
Tremella mesenterica spotted on this afternoon's walk. Also this lovely robin kept us company for a while.

In a Sheffield garden.
Plenty of fox activity at the moment. I'm not sure but I think this might be two pregnant vixens.

I read today that munitions worker inspired smock dresses were fashionable after the war. Is there a possibility that she's wearing one or are you pretty sure it's work wear?
