I don’t get people being upset about this. It’s true! You don’t owe your books anything. Treat them nicely. Bend their spines. Reread them voraciously. Read them once and toss them. It’s up to you.

(Personally, I love having a nice library, but I know other people don’t feel the same).

I don’t know … this seems like another online brouhaha-des-jours. Everything I’ve seen makes Jay seem like a decent person (and relatively sane for a tech CEO). If she is impatient with reading, I don’t care. At least she’s reading.

Mindless criticism and mindless praise are both so dreary. Most art/scholarship fails at some level (or multiple levels). Good writing is hard! I much prefer what you describe.

Agreed. Writing is different. But I’ve also grown much more aware of how many grammar “rules” are mostly 19th century class-based silliness.

Anyhow, clarity is what counts.

I used to be a big stickler in my 30s (when I was a copy editor). But in my old age, I find my priorities shifting. Split those infinitives. Use “ain’t”. I don’t even have strong opinions about the Oxford comma anymore.

This was a weird scene, since all the dictionaries I’ve used show both usages for evacuate.

So how is that different than “really” or “truly”? We often use both as intensifiers, even when something isn’t real or true.

(Not a fan of using literally as an intensifier myself… but it seems fairly normal usage to me).

As much a fan of yours as I am, I think you’re pretty wrong on evacuate. It’s been used in both senses for a long long time. The intransitive has been around since the 17th century.

In my experience with various types of media, I’d say management ambivalence/antipathy toward creatives has been pretty constant. Publishing, journalism, music, film … always so many execs who don’t respect or understand the creative side.

(The exceptions usually being the best execs, of course).
