I think thatβs a very aggressively negative read of a short, innocuous skeet. But to each their own.

I donβt get people being upset about this. Itβs true! You donβt owe your books anything. Treat them nicely. Bend their spines. Reread them voraciously. Read them once and toss them. Itβs up to you.
(Personally, I love having a nice library, but I know other people donβt feel the same).
I donβt know β¦ this seems like another online brouhaha-des-jours. Everything Iβve seen makes Jay seem like a decent person (and relatively sane for a tech CEO). If she is impatient with reading, I donβt care. At least sheβs reading.
Lewis, otoh, was a gullible ass.
Mindless criticism and mindless praise are both so dreary. Most art/scholarship fails at some level (or multiple levels). Good writing is hard! I much prefer what you describe.
Beatles and Elvis both, thankfully. Iβve been waiting most of my life to see those relics fade. Let a thousand second-tier celebrities bloom~

And Dick suddenly has 7 points too? 3-3 in four minutes? That guy is giving me whiplash.
Innumeracy is shockingly common too, even among well educated people (especially journalists).
For a long time, the won-dollar exchange rate was close to 1000:1, which made for a good βanchorβ β 1 Jo won was about US$1 billion. Or thatβs how I remembered most big numbers.
Korea uses the same number system, and back when I was an editor at an English-language newspaper in Korea, the reporters constantly had a rough time converting big numbers.
Agreed. Writing is different. But Iβve also grown much more aware of how many grammar βrulesβ are mostly 19th century class-based silliness.
Anyhow, clarity is what counts.
I used to be a big stickler in my 30s (when I was a copy editor). But in my old age, I find my priorities shifting. Split those infinitives. Use βainβtβ. I donβt even have strong opinions about the Oxford comma anymore.

This was a weird scene, since all the dictionaries Iβve used show both usages for evacuate.
So how is that different than βreallyβ or βtrulyβ? We often use both as intensifiers, even when something isnβt real or true.
(Not a fan of using literally as an intensifier myself⦠but it seems fairly normal usage to me).
As much a fan of yours as I am, I think youβre pretty wrong on evacuate. Itβs been used in both senses for a long long time. The intransitive has been around since the 17th century.

Incel manosphere nonsense especially annoys me. Itβs a good way to get me to leave a platform entirely.
Yes, that was my point. There is still good stuff out there. But the Reddit algorithm is getting more aggressive about pushing other garbage I have zero interest in.
So Iβll go to specific subreddits that I like. But Iβm cutting back. And I might drop altogether if it gets worse.
Wow, Reddit is really starting to enshittify. I used to enjoy that siteβs chaos β¦ and it was navigable. You could find the good and avoid the bad. But increasingly, itβs pushing the bad at you. No thanks.
That building on the right used to be a first-rate bar. The building on the left used to be the fraternity that Beau Biden belonged to.
*You know that Ursula Le Guin myth about "Omelas"? Well this world is the opposite of that. There's this secret, ritual chamber holding eighty moguls in luxurious contentment, while the entire planet and everyone in it is in obvious suffering and decay

In my experience with various types of media, Iβd say management ambivalence/antipathy toward creatives has been pretty constant. Publishing, journalism, music, film β¦ always so many execs who donβt respect or understand the creative side.
