I cannot emphasize enough how much stories like this are a form of uncritical advertising for AI companies.

I understand the impulse to take them at their word when they wonder aloud if their giant matrix multiplication engines are about to become sentient, but it should be resisted.

So if 13 donuts are a “bakers dozen”, what’s the name for the 11 drinking glasses/dinner plates/anything fragile that I inevitably end up with when I buy a dozen and immediately break the first one?

I used to be snarky about my in laws being pack rats but now when we visit my kids spend hours playing with viewmasters, transformers and an etch a sketch.
