If you havent, absolutely check out urasawa no manben on youtube! Its just famous mangakas talking about drawing comics and its so nice.

Also shoujo/josei manga is known to really play around with monologuing and thought bubbles and the panel layout fading out or overlapping etc. in naoki urasawa’s documentary manben a mangaka described shoujo manga to be closer to a theatre play than a movie. I find this stuff super interesting:3

I mean its not a hard set rule. I think its a case of it becoming a standard in manga.

In the example page the text thats non-bubble feels more like monologue/narration. If it was a western comic i could imagine the text being inside a box instead.

I learned this when i discovered that those flashy rings in manga are called “monologue rings” and not “thought rings”. And those are also often used together with thought bubbles.

Thought bubbles are for thoughts. When theyre not in a bubble it’s usually more for inner monologues

Idk if its because of sai or because of the xp pen display tablet but man it is so nice to draw with them together.

My pc connected to the tv and the xp pen display tablet. On the tablet is a quick doodle of a cat in paint tool sai version 2.

Sure this setup is gonna be awful for my posture but i get to draw on the couch and thats more important dont you think

Yeah it worked super well! I bought a sai license and it ran with no issues! Some keyboard shortcuts had to be changed but i could draw just fine in it with my non-display intuos tablet :)
