bart has been ~GoA3 (as in, heavily automated) from day 1 and is installing cbtc—the train control system that forms the basis of almost every automated metro—as we speak. the gap between bart today and full automation is both not that large and not technical

in the most recent (late 90s-00s) second av subway studies, one of the eliminated alternatives included a light rail line from USQ to the LES via 14 an Av D, presumably just to get ahead of the recurring “SAS doesn’t help the village” complaints.

the M14 is a feeder bus for the east village/alphabet city, which is pretty full of people and not super convenient to the subway. the east village “cuphandle” is a slightly deeper-cut, but recurring, subway crayon!

Back in spring, I made final images of some of the buildings slated for demolition along the path of the Red Line Extension.
These were captured over a monthlong span when demolition permits were getting greenlit, wrecking crews finally dispatching after asbestos remediation and utility shutoffs.

I've had zero to do with it other than watching as an Orange Line rider, but rapid implementation of dropbacks on the OL is one of the coolest things I've seen in my time at the MBTA. From a process improvement exploration project to full-bore implementation in just a few months.

very cool system, but it’s always seemed a bizarre choice that the rem is not identified as part of the metro system, even moreso now that it’s expanded. i know that rem is legally, technically its own thing but come on: it’s really just more metro!

With the coming of the Downtown-Oakland BRT, many of the Skybus corridors can be considered "addressed" with some form of upgraded transit. Busways do the heaviest lifting, but their total traffic separation makes them work. (Rapid transit > on-street BRT for Oakland is the biggest downgrade).

Other than the crosstown "urban line," the majority of Skybus miles were part of the group of "suburban lines," structured in a very S-Bahn-esque trunk-branch structure. (As such, I have given them numbers starting with S.) Only two short branches, to Etna and Carnegie, remain to be built.

2. Adding a Morewood stop on the Oakland line, because it seemed like a large destination that the Skybus proposal missed, and definitely *not* because of my own experiences waiting for overcrowded 61 buses at this location. It gets 4k daily riders, only slightly lower than the other Oakland stops.

Actually, though I said I'm building to the study, I've made a couple "editorial" changes:
1. On the M'ville line, adding the Busway's Negley stop. Shadyside is pretty residentially dense. The Baum-Centre Skybus stop *isn't* on the Busway—an odd miss, as it's right in front of Shadyside Hospital.
