It actually rules to watch LLM centrism develop in real time. "Ok yes, tech bros are taking things way too far but LLM skeptics are just as silly, surely we can all agree that it's a transformative new technology and we all need to get onboard" and like, bro. Bro. We know who's side you're really on

So, just to recap, we have two random DOGE bros with basically no knowledge or experience in the humanities (and at least one of whom is a college dropout), who just went around terminating grants that had gone through a full grant application process by feeding in a list of culture war grievance terms, selecting out the grant titles based on the appearance of seemingly “woke” words, then asking ChatGPT “yo, tell me this is DEI” and then sending termination emails the next day from a private server and forging the director’s signature.
This is what “government efficiency” looks like in practice: two guys with zero relevant experience, a keyword list built on culture war grievances, and a chatbot confidently spitting out 120-character verdicts on federal grants that went through actual review processes. The experts who might have explained what these grants actually do? Locked out. The director whose signature appeared on termination letters? Couldn’t tell you which grants got cut or w
Ever wondered how your grant got cancelled? No we know. Some college dropout asked ChatGPT "is it DEI/woke"?

Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM

I have not worked with LLMs, but I am a coder and have worked with other forms of natural language generation, and I don't trust them to do anything I would rely on. I'm still coding the old fashioned way.
I have a friend who works on LLMs, and thinks they are revolutionary, but I'm not persuaded.

No disrespect to Pvt. Lee but in taking off the names of a distinguished Black Lt Gen and Lt Col, and replacing them with the name of an undistinquished private whose only requirements were to be Black and named Lee, they enacted their own vision of what DEI is, they made it come true

What is it with people on Bluesky not allowing others to reply, but allowing them to quote?
I've always found that quotes have the potential to do much more damage. Do others not see it that way, or do they just not think about it?

we appear to have four competing fascist movements jockeying for control: blood & soil nazism under miller and hegseth, darwinian ecofascism from rfk, technofascism under vance and musk, and one Big Wet Hitler who understands the true animating core of the american volk is a deep love for shopping

To give further context, our son’s pulmonologist pushed the “disability” coordination team to see that d/Deaf kids need access to their HANDS to communicate. Which means, minimize IVs, Pulse/Ox, & other things on hands! Also, KNOW which is the kid’s signing hand AND ask the parents when in doubt.

In any case, I think all of us on this thread agree that if any credit is due to "Tilly" (or whatever), it is to the corporate entity that represents all the creators included in that product, and should under no circumstances be anthropomorphized.

U.S. Troops Were Told Iran War Is for “Armageddon,” Return of Jesus
Advocacy group reports commanders giving similar messages at more than 30 installations in every branch of the military
EXCLUSIVE: At more than 30 installations, U.S. commanders told troops the war on Iran is a Christian war.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation has been “inundated” with more than 110 complaints.
One NCO said they were told the U.S. war is to bring about Armageddon and the return of Jesus…

This is also not new, as I'm sure you know - see the lawyers for Michael Jackson's estate suing Rihanna for a vocal fill he lifted from Manu Dibango - but the automated copying without record-keeping makes it even harder to acknowledge or compensate people fairly.

Of course, automated generative systems obscure this even further. Particular gestures, vocal flourishes or dance moves may be copied directly from an individual, without even any averaging performed, but the systems keep no record of any of it.

They get credit, but I don't sit through the credits, and my dad was a sound engineer. There's a star system. How often do you hear about "the new Wes Anderson film"?
Same with music; I'm so sick of digging to find out who sang the backup part that holds together a song credited to someone else.

The End of Language As We Know It? Scientists Challenge 60 Years of Linguistic Research
An international team proposes replacing Hockett’s feature checklist with a model of language as a dynamic, multimodal, and socially evolving system.
SciTechDaily has reported on our paper "The ‘design features’ of language revisited" in @cp-trendscognsci.bsky.social. One short correction to the reporting is that Hockett didn't claim that there is "a set of uniquely human design features" (and we don't claim he did) 1/ #language #linguistics

This is also a big problem with filmmaking in general. With rare exceptions, every film you see in theaters was created by a large crew, many of whom made individual creative decisions. The producers and directors who get top billing are just upper management. Some acknowledge the crew, some don't.

Some local police, sheriff and DA offices are communicating often with ICE, records show
In one instance, a sheriff's office sent an entire list of sentenced individuals just 12 minutes after ICE requested the information.
"Stephen Majeski, a deportation officer with ICE’s enforcement and removal operations, requested a 'list of all sentenced inmates in the facility.' ... 12 minutes later, Elizabeth Conley, chief administrative assistant at Suffolk County sheriff’s office, provided the list in an attachment."
