I photograph and write about the world I see around me here on Vancouver Island: the forests and hllls, things green and wet, the none- to multi-legged critters that scramble, ooze, and slither on our beaches, birds and the occasional beast.
Incredible. Watch until the end to see one goat (young? sick?) being cradled on a saddle on horseback.
Small, creamy to brown mushrooms, with a grooved cap with a central depression (navel). They are the fruiting bodies of a lichen; the dark green coating on the wood (tiny globes) are the algal component. With small mosses and scattered Douglas-fir needles.

Yesterday I filmed several baby birds walking across a street directly at my camera and asked Bluesky to suggest music
Several dozen folks did
Some even dubbed music over the original clip.
I haven't been able to get this out of my head.
So I give you
A Bluesky exclusive:

A large, brown, fluffy Teddy bear in a flowered vintage chair. Smiling. With a black cat curled up in front, staring at the camera. On a light-coloured, flowered cushion. All very cozy.
Teddy bear found dumped out in the forest with trash. Brought home and fixed up, because I couldn't just leave him there in the rain. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/03/rant... #VancouverIsland #Rant #OsitoDePeluche #TeddyBear #NaturePhotography

The pincer arm of a big crab, lying on the sand. It's from a molt, and is intact, except for being removed from the rest of the shell and legs. The exposed side is white, with red edges; the business end is white and strongly toothed; could give you a nasty bite if it were still attached to a live crab.

Beside a tidepool surrounded by rocks, a crow works at a mound of rockweed, tearing out branches. On the right, there's a pile of rockweed, golden brown, as tall as the crow. In the centre, the crow, just tossing another rockweed stem to the left. There are a couple at his feet, already torn out. He will go on digging, even tossing out an oyster, until he finds a rockweed isopod.

A Common Sydney Octopus (Octopus tetricus) sitting among a large number of mussels. The octopus is fairly well hidden, only its head and part of its arm are visible. It is dark grey with light brown on its arm and orange on the underside of the arm. The mussels are all pointing vaguely upwards and have their shells slightly open. The octopus is lower than the top of the mussels. The mussels are covered in algae, and you can see some other sea plants and other invertebrates like a sea star.
Just a bunch of mollusks hanging out and having fun

A peaceful scene. Large rocks, glacier erratics, scattered on a flat sandstone beach. White patches on the rocks are oysters. Beyond the rocks, the blue water of Georgia Strait, then the blue hills of islands; clouds cover the mountain peaks of the mainland. Blue sky, white, fluffy clouds. And on the tip of a rock left of centre, there's a Belted kingfisher. Made my day! I don't see these often.

A rock face in the sunshine at low tide. It's covered with life; oysters, barnacles, and mussels. The blue mussels are tied together in tight groups, the barnacles and oysters spread around. There are a few limpets. In between the animals, an encrusting stage of red alga paints the rock; a few clumps of green rockweed hang down on the right side. The rock itself, where it can be seen, is greenish, with a sandy texture.

A gull flying, seen from behind, wings spread wide; one goes off the edge of the photo. In the centre, the white feathers of his tail are fanned out, and beneath them are the pink feet, dangling. He just left a rock, seen below, covered with barnacles and dark algae. Background; blue sky, blue hills, clouds.
I was too slow, but I like those pink feet! #VancouverIsland #Birds #Birding #Gulls #NaturePhotography
A sandy beach. The outgoing tide has left waves in the sand. And spotted here and there are the "cake decoration" fecal castings of lugworms; round, coiled, tube-like masses of clean sand. The worms in their burrows swallow the sand, digest the organic detritus, and poop out the rest onto the surface.

Three sea anemones just underwater. They have short pink, white and cream tentacles around the mouth and a yellowish-green, knobby base. One has a mouth full of sand; another has a piece of seaweed. They're on sand with bits of seaweed and barnacle shells; there's a green blade of translucent sea lettuce.

Top view of a birds' nest fungus. Like a tiny, beige bowl with a brown rim. Inside the bowl are the spore containers, called periodoles. These look like sugar cookies, plain, without icing. Bonus: on the left side of the fungus, there's a small black fly with grey wings. Beneath, an old 2x4, split and stained, with tips of cedar needles.

Pale pinkish mushroom, probably Mycena sp. Straight, smooth stalk, rounded cap with a hint of gills showing through near the rim. It stands surrounded by fern-like moss, possibly a step moss. With a blackened Douglas-fir cone at the bottom, black twigs behind the mushroom.

A small lake at the end of winter. Blue water, blue sky, white clouds. And in the middle of the lake, a tiny islet where a short tree stretches out its winter-bare branches. On the islet, on the shores, and even in the water, dead grasses, a warm brown, wait for spring. Evergreen trees, hemlock and Douglas-firs, line the far shore; behind them can be seen the tops of blue mountains.

A rock outcropping with patches of moss fills the bottom half of the photo. Above, against a clear blue sky, a hemlock branch reaches out from the right. A pine tree fills the left side. Below, on the rock, there's a crawler: a remote-controlled all-terrain vehicle, an adult toy. It has attempted a slope too much for it and has fallen and lies, wheels up. (Not to worry; the owner is on the rock above.)

A stone surrounded by moss. The top of the stone is mostly covered by a whitish lichen with many round, black fruiting bodies like tiny buttons. Black borders mark off individual lichens. A few small clumps of moss have taken root in cracks in the stone.

A view from a mossy rock outcrop; at the bottom of the photo it's all bright yellow-green (chartreuse?) moss. Beyond this, a stand of Douglas-firs, and in the gaps between the trunks, the stripy blue water of a lake. On the right, branches of a pine tree fill the upper part of the photo.

A large patch of a "bone" lichen. Pale green tubes, mostly hanging down, somewhat bent, lumpy. Some are darker green, others almost white. Among them are several fruiting bodies, apothecia; they are like bowls with pale rims and painted a greenish brown inside. Background; dark brown Douglas-fir trunk, green of the forest behind.

A large, old stump, well rotted, on the forest floor. The wood is reddish, crumbling, covered with patches of various lichens. On top, there's moss. And on the sides and top, the stump supports evergreen salal bushes, huckleberry bushes, and several hemlock saplings. Besides, unseen, a community of critters, spiders, etc. On either side and behind the stump there are the trunks of young Douglas-firs; thin, straight brown trunks. Greenery behind the stump is mostly salal; in front, it's moss.

On a bed of moss, one single Reindeer lichen, Cladonia portentosa, stands out: almost pure white, with twice- or thrice-forked tips. One stalk is broken, showing that it's a hollow tube. Between the branches, there's a fruiting body of another Cladonia. Off to the right there are two Ladder Cladonias, a pixie-cup lichen, unique in that from the centre of the cups, sprout new stalks, each with its own cup. The cups are light brownish with reddish rims.

A bright green lichen (because it's raining) on a stump. Upright stalks or clubs (podetia) covered with lumpy granules. Beneath them on the wood of the stump, there are tiny, scale-like thalli. A fallen, brown Douglas-fir needle gives an idea of the size. Background; more lichens in the shadow of the hole in the stump.

A hillside covered with dead or dormant bracken ferns; when they froze they turned a bright red. A small evergreen to one side provides contrast. Behind the ferns, yellow-green moss carpets the rock. In the distance, there is dark, misty forest, evergreens in various tones of green, spring-like bright green to deep, dark, blue-green.
