"Taft you old dog!"
Canadiana deep cuts are hitting nicely
Ehh π
I dunno I think we're gonna look back on the hype for this movie kinda sheepishly. It's not great.
Pitch for a new spy movie: a CIA agent spends years getting close to a terrorist suspect then just before he gets the crucial piece of evidence heβs fired and replaced with a teenager who doesnβt speak any foreign languages but does have a lot of followers on X.
Everybody dies.

(The only other David I've ever advocated for and approved of).
4) The Leader's spaceship crumbling to bits to reveal him doing the same stupid comb thing and like a whole Act later to loop back to a short but dense bit is π«
One of the last pretty good episodes, and that series of jokes might be the highlight.
And Hans dying a horrible, cosmic goo death:
2) Lisa utters such a dumb line that a kid would say: "But we heard them hovering!"
3) Flanders emerging from the closet with comb + wax paper so dumb/funny when shown in that context. Also continues his bit of his unlikely sounds (his angelic singing voice, highpitched scream etc)
It's such a weird/dumb joke that they get so much mileage out of:
1) Marge tricks kids into abandoning the leader for their parents who bought them hover bikes, only for the kids to pledge allegiance to "hover bikes!" ("ehh close enough" -- such good kid logic)

Trying puberty again
Hadn't considered that for this THX! Checks out. The editing in the first 20 minutes is A+
As usual, dialogue heavy stuff is tough (detainment scene ugh) and the intrigue of that 1st act fizzles once we're in Lucas action mode.
Loved the PS2 cutscene-looking monkey mutants from the 2004 cut tho
Half of this thing works, but then Georgy boy just can't help himself.
A front-runner or perhaps the only contender for the "best character demise because they can't drive a manual transmission rocket car" award

4.5 is a stretch but a nice little flick, if not a bit over-narrated and over-scored.
Almost kinda smart and then Tony Scott just can't help himself and shoe-horns a dozen or so explosions into the last six minutes. Charming as hell!

"When you dream, are you still Joey?"
A jarringly confident, provocative, and focused film that I could talk about for hours.

MVP is in a good spot! Now onto our big vision/use-case: building a tool that measures alignment
Yeah, interesting. I didn't hate Nosferatu but felt it suffered from feeling to "samey" to the rest of his work -- a bit predictable.
I'd love to see him avoid the Wes Anderson trap and experiment with something tonally and aesthetically different
Oh damn been meaning to watch! Okay done. Just gotta figure out what to recommend back and no, it won't be Miami Vice
And yeah naturally have this sync with Lettrboxd! Not on their API yet but in time after we get this ironed out a bit
Try it out! Will for sure be buggy and probably broken here or there: flicrec.com/recommend
PS: send me one thrillhousecycling@gmail.com
Also really want to use this to experiment w/different way of communicating online πΎ
Idea: have no comments or chats, but instead movies can be discussed publicly or privately 1 on 1 via short audio clips (back and forth "talking stick" style)
Cuz I dunno more interesting than chat bubbles?
π
Into this idea of gaining movie "cred" overtime as you:
1) watch movies that are recommended to you and don't bail (kind of a "karma" mechanic)
2) an accuracy score for your "ratings guess" vs how a friend rates it
3) as your score increases, appear as a curator (wc?) by diff genres etc
π
The next feature will be the ability to recommend a movie back at someone; get that "movie exchange" thing going
Key will also be introducing some kind of playful/fun SHAME mechanic if someone doesn't watch your recommendation by the deadline (A silly wall of shame or something?)
After that...
1) Head to FlicRec.com/recommend and sign up
2) Search for and select a movie
3) Enter a friend's email
4) Guess at what they'll rate it (they won't see this until after they watch/rate)
They'll get an email, accept, and you can chat about the movie
That's V1! Future state...
πΌMADE A MOVIE THINGπΌ
Rough but a sneak peak... Just launched the v. early version of something I've been working on with a friend called FlicRecπΌ
Basically it's a way to recommend movies to friends and set a deadline so that they'll actually watch the damn thing!
Right now, it's pretty simple...
