β€œWe make this pronouncement: Whether considered as a doctrine, or an historical fact, or a movement, Socialism, if it remains truly Socialism, even after it has yielded to truth and justice on the points which we have mentioned, cannot be reconciled with the teachings of the Catholic Church because its concept of society itself is utterly foreign to Christian truth.

If Socialism, like all errors, contains some truth (which, moreover, the Supreme Pontiffs have never denied), it is based nevertheless on a theory of human society peculiar to itself and irreconcilable with true Christianity. Religious socialism, Christian socialism, are contradictory terms; no one can be at the same time a good Catholic and a true socialist.

We have also summoned Communism and Socialism again to judgment and have found all their forms, even the most modified, to wander far from the precepts of the Gospel.”

β€œThis all too imminent danger, Venerable Brethren, as you have already surmised, is bolshevistic and atheistic Communism, which aims at upsetting the social order and at undermining the very foundations of Christian civilization...

The Communism of today, more emphatically than similar movements in the past, conceals in itself a false messianic idea. A pseudo-ideal of justice, of equality and fraternity in labor impregnates all its doctrine and activity with a deceptive mysticism, which communicates a zealous and contagious enthusiasm to the multitudes entrapped by delusive promises. This is especially true in an age like ours, when unusual misery has resulted from the unequal distribution of the goods of this world.”

You are the rock, that rock, which he established, so that he might repulse Satan with it. β€œThat we may fully understand Mary's power, we find it necessary to refer to one other of her titles, that of Queen of heaven, which all Christians have ever given to her. It is not an empty title, but it signifies that Mary has that special dominion in heaven, which properly belongs to a Queen. This dominion arises from the union and affinity that exists between God and the Blessed Virgin. Because Christ is King and Lord, the mother who brought Him forth, is Queen and Mistress. This dominion is similar to that which belongs to a wife or mother, by reason of their connection with a king. Although she has not the supreme power of commanding, she has that which belongs to a queen above all other subjects; and thus a higher honour is due to her than to the other Saints. She alone, under Christ, occupies a place in heaven above all the Choirs of Angels and Saints, as is becoming the Mother of the King, and the Queen of all the heavenly inhabitants.”

β€œThe reverence paid by Catholics to holy images does not offend against the commandment of God. It is true that the latter part of the first commandment declares: β€œThou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing,” but this is explained by the words that follow: β€œThou shalt not adore them (non adorabis ea), nor serve them.” (Exodus xx. 4, 5, and Deuteronomy v. 9.) The meaning, therefore, clearly is: Thou shalt not make unto thyself a graven thing or idol for the sake of adoring it as a false god or idol.

The words, β€œbow down,” in the Protestant version, instead of β€œadore,” are calculated unhappily to mislead unreflecting persons. This commandment cannot be taken to condemn the use of images intended to promote the honor and worship of our Lord Jesus Christ, the true living God, or the inferior honor due to the holy angels and the saints, as this is not worship of strange gods, and, therefore, not idolatry.”

What Rule is to be observed in the Interpretation of Scripture.

But it will be said, If the words, the sentiments, the promises of Scripture, are appealed to by the Devil and his disciples, of whom some are false apostles, some false prophets and false teachers, and all without exception heretics, what are Catholics and the sons of Mother Church to do? How are they to distinguish truth from falsehood in the sacred Scriptures? They must be very careful to pursue that course which, in the beginning of this Commonitory, we said that holy and learned men had commended to us, that is to say, they must interpret the sacred Canon according to the traditions of the Universal Church and in keeping with the rules of Catholic doctrine, in which Catholic and Universal Church, moreover, they must follow universality, antiquity, consent. And if at any time a part opposes itself to the whole, novelty to antiquity, the dissent of one or a few who are in error to the consent of all or at all events of the great majority of Catholics, then they must prefer the soundness of the whole to the corruption of a part; in which same whole they must prefer the religion of antiquity to the profaneness of novelty; and in antiquity itself in like manner, to the temerity of one or of a very few they must prefer, first of all, the general decrees, if such there be, of a Universal Council, or if there be no such, then, what is next best, they must follow the consentient belief of many and great masters. Which rule having been faithfully, soberly, and scrupulously observed, we shall with little difficulty detect the noxious errors of heretics as they arise. β€œ... one should know that the law of the Christians consists in faith and good works. For faith is the first of all virtues in the lives of believers. Whence, even on the first day there is said to be light, since God is portrayed as having said: Let there be light, [Gen.1:3] that is, "let the illumination of belief appear." Indeed, it is also because of this illumination that Christ came down to earth. Good work is no less demanded from a Christian; for just as it is written in our law: Without faith it is impossible to please God, [Heb. 11:6] so it is also written: Just as a body without a spirit is dead, so, too, faith without works is dead. [James 2:20] This is the Christian law, and whoever keeps this law properly, shall be saved.”
[Pope St. Nicholas I, Letter 99, Questions of the Bulgars, 866]

β€œ... one should know that the law of the Christians consists in faith and good works.
