Europe is moving quickly in most areas while Brexitism dominates our approach to everything and we remain stuck in the slow lane

Very interesting. Will be fascinating to see how UKG squares this with its trade agreements.

Positive vote of confidence in European standards and a practical step on alignment from UKG

No no no, the EU is dependent on the UK for its security. As proven just now when Cyprus, under attack because it has a UK military base, had to rely on the * checks notes * "opportunistic" French sending their frigate Languedoc to help defend it, and a whole taskforce on top.

Not offensive, just a bit silly.

Defacing the flag has a long tradition though

As my go-to commentators on all things Irish, what you think of this monstrosity?

Alas, Starmer is like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

Still terrified of the UK's Trumpist popular press.

Once area where Europe is moving quickly is security.

If the UK wants to influence those structures, it'll have to do more than stare in the window. It'll have to come inside.

They really will. This will be seen as a "Brexit hiatus", when the UK went a bit mad.

Kind of a mid-life crisis at a state level.

In 10 years, when the UK is even closer aligned to EU, everyone will be asking why the UK economy had to suffer for so long.

Very hard to make that argument real for Joe Bloggs, on the one hand, but equally they recognise that the broader area of Brexit is a sticky wicket for them.

Conclusion: focus on Brexit

Nigel Mirage? If his opponents can't use that...
Sticking my neck out now and saying Reform get fewer MPs next time. You can play the 'stay away' game when MEP coz no one's watching but Clacton is home turf and everyone sees him.
+council fails
Fool some of the people some of the time situation.

The Size of the country on whether it’s susceptible to interference is irrelevant, what matters is the checks and balances in place, how it copes with its own internal problems etc….

Sadly a large element of British (really English nowadays) thinking is closer to that large element of Russian thinking that believes it is exceptional and should dominate other countries. A large section of British (and English) society would like to broaden its horizons and there is the rub.

Sure, let me think about it! It is possible but it would require changes to the constitutional order in CH, and would be relatively unstable

Find this kind of thing quite chilling - the invasive cultural conformity hoped for by the UK far right.

I just heard the people of Clacton are calling him "Nigel Mirage"

Could equally apply to Farage and the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries.

Or indeed the European Parliament itself.

What's interesting is that people don't see the differences between Green parties in different countries.

The UK press will throw every charge possible at the GP, but they're a serious party now.

The counter-example of Moldova successfully resisting Russian influence operationsβ€”and I suspect some US meddling as wellβ€”since 2019 is instructive tooβ€”Moscow poured money & propaganda into their last election but failed to stop pro-EU Sandu from winning again

β€˜Bitter result’ for Friedrich Merz as Greens win in German car heartland Cem Γ–zdemir gains 30.2% of vote in Baden-WΓΌrttemberg, ahead of CDU, with far-right AfD in third

Why is this a surprise? B-W is a bastion of the Greens, and the Greens there have a good relationship with industry. This looks like normal politics.

I know, dear Richard. I am referring to @kresten2.bsky.social's phrase, "Both countries can probably survive (and more than that) on the outside." When one play this out, kne realize how unbeatable the EU has become.

Ireland, a small, anglophone country, is an easy place to target, at least for attention.

The flipside is it is a small country, with a very established democratic system and media freedom

In particular - and this will sound like a joke - but probably every1 knows some1 who knows Edwin Edogbo
