Flann's brother, Gerry O'Nolan was a member of the Dublin Chess Club. In recognition of his 50 years in the club, we organised a tournament in his honour. 2 days before it began, he walked out of a pub in Donegal, and dropped dead. So, we held his memorial before he was buried!

It has a whole page description about becoming a member of the Fianna. Run through a forest with loosed hair, recite poetry and play chess!

Peter, BTW, I was hoping you would return to Bunratty, but sadly the tournament died with Covid. But, I would like to give you a copy of "At swim, two birds" by Flann O'Brien. Will you be at the olympiad later this year, or is there a postal address I could send it to?

Duh, obvious now.

Then he wrote Vi using it. Others wrote Hack and Larn, games I spent far too much time playing. I presume emacs also uses the curses library.

Just like vi/vim/nvim key bindings, also fixed in the 70s. I was telling my son yesterday about the old 80x24 terminals and how they had escape sequences to do things like move the cursor or insert a blank line. But each terminal had their own set, so Bill Joy created the curses library. 1/2

I guess you're talking about cricket. But throw a dog a bone, and tell me who the hairy fruits are.

DS9 was my favourite Startrek. I once spotted Colm Meaney in Dublin airport. He was waiting to pick someone up. I was going to go over and talk to him, but he had a "leave me the fuck alone"-face on, so I left him alone!

Software projects often follow the 80/20 rule. 80% of the functionality takes 20% of the time and vice versa. Having to talk to legacy systems can also dramatically increase the cost of development.

As an Irish developer, I think โ‚ฌ1.2m is too much, although such apps are like icebergs. The general public only sees the 10% above the surface.

ยฃ35m is just crazy.

"Sozzled" was common parlance amongst my friends in university 40 years ago. The final degree of intoxication was being "blotto"!

I have never heard of Nate Monday before, but I did find a C++ standards committee proposal by Gazper and a Nate Nichols. Could they be the same person?

List of heads of state and government who were later imprisoned - Wikipedia

The South Koreans have form here. From memory, they have charged, convicted and imprisoned 7 of their former presidents!

I wonder why they keep changing the look and feel of UIs. 2 reasons come to mind:
1. Designers are bored and want to show how cool they are.
2. It's easier to explain UI changes than changes in the threading activation algorithm.

We watched "4 Weddings and a Funeral" last night which is also wonderful. My 20-something son prefers "Notting Hill", especially Rhys Ifan's dreadful character.

Does Librewolf manage passwords and can it translate websites from other languages?

Our neighbours are dog breeders and told me recently that Italian greyhounds can't be house trained. Is that true?

Can Mr. Dodgy not lend you his horse for the last leg of the journey?

My dad twice appeared in the Meccano magazine for his creations. Good to see it lurking in the window.

Two alpacas in a shed 30 minutes after being castrated.

Two alpacas in a shed 30 minutes after being castrated.

I helped castrate two of our alpacas today. As you can see they were back on all fours 30 minutes after the op. The vet sedated them, injected anaesthetic and pain killers into their groin area.

We hope they will be easier to handle and won't fight as much with the other members of the herd.

1.Bf7 looks good. The bishop can't be taken and black's king has to move.

First idea was to play 1...b5 to gain more space on the queen side. 2nd idea was 1...g5, but my final idea is the botvinnik Kd7.

We had a bumper crop this year in Ireland. I've heard the same about the UK. Was it a similarly good harvest in Canada?

I must watch your C++Now talk tomorrow. It sounds as if you have come a long way since you were describing your work on twitter.
