For Bury-born opera singer Soraya Mafi, there’s something particularly special about her latest role as Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute

Looking forward to this role début! A dream role finally ticked off! And with the company that introduced me to opera 😍 @operanorth.bsky.social
Huge thanks to @davidnice.bsky.social for featuring my performance as Gilda for Irish National Opera in ‘Best of Opera 2024’ for @theartsdesk.bsky.social
As usual, there were less outstanding opera productions than concerts (going to be a bigger one), but plenty of standout performances and two rich comedies in Wexford and Dublin. A survey from self and colleagues for @theartsdesk.bsky.social theartsdesk.com/opera/best-2...
Love it when bookshops or libraries arrange their books appropriately...
Spot the composer!!! Terrible photo of the beautiful fresco on the ceiling of Tonhalle Zürich, where I performed Bach Cantatas 10 & 140 and the Magnificat in Eb with the RIAS Kammerchor a few days ago. Final concert tonight (of the tour, and of my year!!!)
I felt especially bad for the singers featured in the photographs. It was incredibly disrespectful—particularly for one of them, a young artist with the company, making their ‘big’ role debut. This is hardly the way to inspire or support someone who is meant to be under your educational care.
I believe if anyone wants to see the originals then they are included in a ‘Slipped Disc’ article
I would, but since the post has been taken down, I’d like to think a lesson has been learned—hopefully!🙏🏽
Tonight on BBC Radio 3:
And last, but NEVER least - THE SOPRANO!
In light of a recent social media post, I’d like to share my own definitions on some opera terms!
He flies, he waltzes and he makes us all in love with him!
🎭 Thrilled for my 3rd *Rigoletto* tonight! It's an **audio-described performance** with a pre-show **touch tour**—making opera accessible to all. Honored to be part of a company that champions inclusion. Here’s to sharing Verdi’s magic with everyone! 🌟🎶 #OperaForAll #Rigoletto
Thank you so much! ☺️

My Irish side is from my mum - her family are from Co.Mayo. She was born in Bury but was raised for a time in Ballyhaunis. My dad was from Tehran; they met in Manchester in their twenties & stayed after the Iranian Revolution. A unique mix, but a shared a love of great food, music and family!
Wow - thank you so much! I’m truly touched the performance resonated with you & your friend. Gilda holds a special place in my heart & I feel so lucky to have shared the stage with such extraordinary colleagues. As for ‘best artist in an opera’, I’m honoured to even be mentioned in that light! 😮
My pleasure! X
Wow - thank you David! I cannot tell you how much this role means to me, and to make my Irish debut in this role has been extremely poignant for many reasons. Thank you again 🙏🏽
Looking forward to my Irish début today!
Oh my goodness - I sang this in my third year undergraduate recital and the English Song Prize at RCM! But in my humble opinion the seminal recording is, and always will be, this one:

The moon disguised as Saturn
Damn - wish I’d thought up something this industry suitable! 👏👏👏
