This is awful news, Jay. I'm relieved to see your follow-up post that you have a plan to keep the research going, but you should not have to be working through this setback. I'm so sorry.

A view of the headwaters of the Wakulla River, with 4 manatees. Two are inside the roped-off swimming area and two are further back, with a backdrop of clear shallow river and overhanging trees.
Manatee courtship. Two adults (presumed male) are following a larger adult as she swims directly below the camera.
Three adult manatees float just inside the swimming area, jointly staring at a rope for no obvious reason.
It was a good weekend to get outside. Manatees congregating in Wakulla Springs State Park, in advance of the coming winter weather.

A favorite FSU tradition continued today: Field Day! Our entire bio department got together to just... hang out and play. This year: soccer, kickball, frisbee, team rock-paper-scissors, kubb, 18th century dancing, paper airplane contest, badminton, a "slow bike race," a potluck, and s'mores.
