Bar charts and a pie chart looking at the demographics of thin-ice fatalities in Minnesota over the last 50 years or so.
The early 1980s was pretty treacherous for iced-over Minnesota lakes. Climate change, warmer winters and how that impacts ice fishing (and deaths due to thin ice). @insideclimatenews.org story by Kristoffer Tigue, here: insideclimatenews.org/news/1501202...

A strong Jet Stream keeps cold air up over the Arctic, while a weak and wobbly Jet Stream will allow Arctic air to push south while warm air from the Equator pushes north.
Explainer of a polar vortex, which has become an annual event over much of the U.S. of late. This graphic has been published a few times over the years, most recently for Kristoffer Tigue's @insideclimatenews.org story last week. insideclimatenews.org/news/1001202...
Southern California's Santa Ana winds (and Diablo winds, in Northern California) occur when a high pressure system over the Great Basin pushes heated air toward the Pacific Ocean. The wind rushing over mountains concentrates through canyons and create atypical gusts which can exacerbate fires and stymie firefighting efforts.
Explaining the Santa Ana winds, a contributor to the nightmarish conflagrations in and around Los Angeles this past week. Typical Santa Anas have gusts up to 50-60 mph; some gusts last week clocked in around 100 mph.

Make that "OLD" Dalton Highway.
Frozen debris lobe is moving to overtake the Dalton Highway in Alaska. Like "The Blob" (1958) it's gigantic and utterly unstoppable unless it can be frozen. As of two years ago it was less than 10 feet from engulfing the highway.
