A two-column status table titled "Stage" and "Start Date" tracks the timeline of a manuscript submission from its preliminary data submission on October 8, 2025, to its eventual withdrawal on March 2, 2026. The log reveals a lengthy and repetitive administrative process, particularly between October 26, 2025, and February 19, 2026, where the status cycled more than ten times between "Contacting Potential Reviewers" and "Waiting for Reviewer Assignment," suggesting significant difficulty in securing peer reviewers. Following these numerous failed attempts to move into the active review phase, the final entry shows the manuscript was officially withdrawn on March 2, 2026, at 09:08:18.
My first paper had to be mailed to Stockholm, Sweden, and then mailed to reviewers around the world. Everything by mail! It was submitted, reviewed, revised, typeset, and published in 3 months. I feel bad for early-career scientists who can't find a single reviewer after 5 months. It's gotta change.
Mixed methods๐๏ธ; tried atlas with AI coding just out of curiosity; it was overwhelming i.e. sucked imho! Maybe useful as a second pass.
Excited for this!!

This kind of โnewsโ from Anthropic always reminds me of this cartoon/meme.
โIt is just this lack of connection to a concern with truthโthis indifference to how things really areโthat I regard as of the essence of bullshit.โ

Saw this metaphor by Terence Tao floating around about one of the drawbacks of using AI to solve hard math problems, and kind of have the same feeling for โvibe scienceโ or โfully automated scienceโ line of research in #AI4Science.

Any chance this will be recorded? ๐

I'm a cognitive scientist with an interest in epistemic vigilance, and this essay that's been going around gave me pause.
I don't think it's straightforward to apply the concept of epistemic vigilance to interactions with LLMs, as this essay does.

1. Kevin Gross and I have a new paper out today PLOS Biology.
We used economic models based around screening games and the market for unpaid labor to highlight a meltdown cycle threatening peer review.
AI makes continuous reproducibility and robustness testing trivial. What happens to science under new levels of scrutiny and stress-testing by default?
Some thoughts on how this could play out, informed by watching open science play out over the last decade.
AI and the scientific monocultures.

Einstein, an AI agent student that logs into canvas, watches your lectures, does your assignments, and gets your degree for you.
Keeps your brain from accidentally learning something.. ๐๐๐
I don't take issue in using #AI to help w/ writing, but is anyone else facing the issue that #LLMs are increasingly sounding so similar that you gotta actively adjust your writing to not sound like one.
Thinking if that meant my writing was average... ๐ค
Maybe this is an opportunity to be unique? ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Many are appropriately outraged by Altmanโs comments here implying that raising a human child is akin to โtrainingโ an AI model.
This is part of a broader pattern where AI industry leaders use language that collapses the boundary between human and machine.

Have you noticed how โquietlyโ is quietly becoming the new โdelveโ of #LLMs.
Paratactic micro-sentences are everywhere.
No connectors.
No flow.
Just line breaks pretending to be insight.
Kind of cringe. Sorry๐คฎ

Lots of evidence though!

Wish there was a web word count or distribution that was quietly tracking how content distribution is changing (/becoming homogeneous).

This is a new phenomenon and business model exploiting gaps in publishing. The cartel uses fake names to produce AI-written or plagiarised papers. Reference lists contain 100s of paid entries. If papers are retracted, no real authors are punished, and citations still count, even from retracted papers
โI donโt think using large language models is unethical. I also donโt think itโs a good idea to use a nail gun as a toothbrush, even if the nail gun company runs late night television ads that say โmakes a great toothbrush!โ

1/ Finally wrote up โThe Story of Mendeleyโ! Most people know the tool, few know about its rise and fall. The Mendeley story provides important clues for how to build self-sustaining AND non-extractive knowledge commons, which is why I think it deserves more attention ๐งต
Hospitals here, including children's hospitals, are using AI transcription tools as well. Studies have shown they are inaccurate the majority of the time, fabricate content during silences about abuse and drug usage (what could go wrong!!!), and delete the original audio for "privacy" reasons
Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude. Keep thinking.
