So RIP Stripcreator / long live Stripcreator. I know it wouldn't have made much of a difference to anyone to anyone if it had just vanished, but as I get increasingly sappy about the old creative DIY web, I'm happy there was a way to have it not vanish forever.
But its time had come. It needed major upgrades that weren’t worth doing. Facing shutdown, I used OpenAI’s Codex to turn it into a static archive and was blown away. It tore through my terrible code and converted 25 years of database entries to flat files so it no longer needed a MySQL server.
The site’s popularity (peaking in 2003 at 84,858 comics created) had been in decline for a long time, but I kept it running. I felt loyal to the community and its history and somewhat proud that this high school dropout’s janky code continued to run.
25 years ago I launched a silly website to make comics called stripcreator.com. It was all hand-coded, learn-as-you-go PHP/MySQL spaghetti code written in the wild west of web 2.0 where such things as dynamically updating images on a webpage were new and exciting. A different time.

A year or so ago I threw one of my songs into it to see what it'd do and it came up with some interesting melody ideas & changes that struck me as "catchy", though it really pushed it towards an EDM sound. Been feeling odd about it ever since.
