oh! my solution has been to just use syncthing to my homeserver and have that sync to other devices for me (music n stuff) perhaps i should look into that for things that don't need 2-way syncing

It could possibly be due to the firewall rules as this is a trial VPS, you can't even add the auto-dns rules on the firewall page (despite them being a tickbox pretty much)
