A Guardian opinion piece from Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, is headlined: "Labour must stop channelling Reform and unite with progressives. That's the lesson from Gorton and Denton."

I'm proud to lead a progressive region here in the West of England, working together to deliver change that people can see and feel.

Sadiq's right: a brave and bold vision of hope can build on the government's trade deals for jobs, breakfast clubs for kids, and protections for renters.

Labour must cease taking progressive voters for granted, says Sadiq Khan London mayor criticises PM for calling Greens โ€˜extremeโ€™ after Gorton and Denton loss, saying it is a โ€˜flawed strategyโ€™ * Sadiq Khan: โ€˜Labour must stop channelling Reform and unite with progressives. Thatโ€™s the byelectionโ€™s lessonโ€™ The mayor of London has said the Gorton and Denton byelection has exposed a โ€œfar-reaching change and fracturingโ€ in UK politics and Labour must ditch its โ€œflawed strategyโ€ of taking liberal progressives for granted. In what appears to be an attack on Keir Starmer, Sadiq Khan challenged the prime ministerโ€™s branding of the Green party and its policies as โ€œextremeโ€, saying many of its supporters shared Labourโ€™s values but were disappointed in the government. While critics talk London down, the facts tell another story: record-low murder rates and the fewest homicides of those under 25 this century.

Our strategy is working. But one death is too many, and weโ€™ll keep investing in the police and young Londoners.

This is thanks to the hard work of so many across London & the leadership shown by Sadiq Khan in leading with a tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime.

That's why I'll continue to do all I can to invest in the Met and in my Violence Reduction Unit to deliver positive opportunities for young Londoners - so we can build on this significant progress.
