Last point.. actually i think my attitude to and thought about religion owes more to pratchet than anything else
A combination of cory doctorows enshitification and alice Roberts domination did make me think that some of the steps of enshitificstion could be applied to how the church has interacted with the population over the last 1500 years

But as i am no expert. I placed the source of that thinking on reading Tom Holland, but having looked at others reaction to his books i seem to have read something very different into it. To the extent that i have been searching my shelves in case it was a totally different source.. no joy as yet
But as a second attempt i was thinking about how the organised nature of religion and belief seemed to change with the adoption of Christianity as a sort of civil glue towards the end of the roman empire. I was not trying to say that belief did not exist prior, but that it had a different place

I don't know what events you are referring to, but was it because they believed that their religion required them to do that, or was the religion a way of demonstrating a cultural absorbtion?
I think that misses out on the idea that this sort of belief did not exist before Christianity. It just wasn't that important
