PJM Files Price Collar, Expedited Interconnection as Part of Large Load Plan | PJM Inside Lines

Massive shout out to all the dedicated advocates and state lawmakers, submitting position statements in the CIFP process (insidelines.pjm.com/pjm-files-pr...) and in the following request for comments on extending the price collar by PJM. Overwhelming support for extension leads to strong protection

On Friday PJM filed for a two year extension of the price collar, which will (partially) shield ratepayers from spiking capacity prices in the region (without the collar the 27/28 BRA would have been 60ish% higher than the already record high price).

This did not happen in a vacuum.

Meme from Arrested Development wherein Tobias and Lindsay discuss an open marriage, tweaked to reflect irrational enthusiasm for the abundance agenda - "I've advised numerous policy makers to adopt de-regulated supply side economics" - "does it work for those people?" "No, it never does....." "But it might work with abundance"

And frankly, that's a tough sell! Thank goodness for them, their profits means they have Superbowl and Olympic ad money to make the sell.

However, credit where its due, while all this seems like a grim cash grab, they do have enough of a sense of humor to call the bill the affordable energy act.

And Uncertainty means risk! And while they want that $, they don't want the risk, so their bill to re-reg now in the MD legislature specifically says that all the risk for stranded assets land on the general public!

(so private profit, socialized risk)

Basically, electricity is getting expensive due to large load build out, and they want in.

BUT! They also know there is a lotta uncertainty! Who knows which data centers will online, or stay online. PJM, cut its load estimates used in the December capacity auction by over 4 GW just months later....

Pointing instead to surging commodity costs tied to load growth across the region (data centers) as the cause.

But, they have a solution! Let them rate-base generation in Maryland again. Note: Exelon can, and has always been able to build gen instate, but not get a guaranteed return on investment.

Meanwhile, BGE took to the press to complain that its unfair that MD OPC points to their spiraling distribution costs (which are capital expenses they make a return on) - www.baltimoresun.com/2026/02/12/b...

And says lets not point fingers, but look for solutions, which has big hot dog suit energy

So, Maryland Investor Owned Utility BGE fired 47 union employees - while keeping contract labor - last week, referencing its ability to recover costs....

At the same time posting yet ANOTHER year of record profits and having tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars for Superbowl ads....

Cool
