Carceral Draftsman
The ‘Enlightenment,’ which discovered the liberties, also invented the disciplines. That’s the most oft-quoted line from Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish, probably be…
Penitent by @danbullock.bsky.social is full of difficult questions and few answers, tackling the prison reforms of the early 19th century and their consequences. In many ways it's a troublesome game, but those same details make it a worthwhile dissection. My review: spacebiff.com/2026/03/05/p...

Mollie wrote an excellent piece. I encourage other historical designers to check it out. Particularly, those of us that tackle challenging topics.

The Slicks by Maggie Nelson. It’s a recent essay book on Sylvia Plath and Taylor Swift. Borrows heavily from Anne Carson’s Gender of Sound, which of course is the more interesting text…

Played Meltwater by @a-cute-nausea.bsky.social (with the @hollandspiele.bsky.social rules ofc, I own both copies and enjoy the mix). Two armies fighting to the bitter end, pressganging and force marching until all that was left was a tiny radiated ice glacier …

I've had the pleasure of playtesting Taylor's game 3 times the last few years. So excited for this to be published and for people to engage with the challenge of car-free transit.

Actually, I want to quote this again, because I think some of us are making the misstep of allowing this conversation to proceed on Dancey's terms.
He insists he was only talking about *ideas*, not finished products. What goofballs we are! Except...

This is definitely one of those games where the host sets up before the guests arrive and is provided with pizza as tribute.

Tbh, there’s a fantastic game under that O’toolean avalanche. The flow is fairly straightforward: play a “focus” card and pick two out of the three actions to resolve. You can typically program your entire card sequence if you’re not playing one of the more competitive scenarios.

An adorable valentine with a photo of Liz Davidson. Text reads: Would you be our creative director? To Liz, from Leder Games.

While I think this is often true, it also elides another critical point: professional designers often don't realize how smart and capable people are, espeically people who don't play games. 🧵

War With A Mate
Y’all know about the “War with a Mate” podcast? It’s a couple of British dudes - who’ve only played Catan and D&D before - putting themselves through the entire Campaign for North of Africa (I think they’re about to finish the introductory scenario after about a year of playing) warwithamate.co.uk
