People familiar with my music may remember Sarah from a time before the series; she's the narrator for "Phantoms of Summer," "This Is My Town," and "Sycamore Tree."
Two cats have jumped onto a sash window and climbed up under the blind, dislodging it
Working from home proving more stressful than I feel is necessary
Writing is thinking.
It's not some marginal boring task you can skip. It's the heart of it.
IF YOU'RE UNEMPLOYED IT'S NOT BECAUSE THERE ISNT ANY WORK JUST LOOK AROUND: A HOUSING SHORTAGE, CRIME, POLLUTION; WE NEED BETTER SCHOOLS AND PARKS. WHATEVER OUR NEEDS, THEY ALL REQUIRE WORK. AND AS LONG AS WE HAVE UNSATISFIED NEEDS, THERE'S WORK TO BE DONE. SO ASK YOURSELE, WHAT KIND OF WORLD HAS WORK BUT NO JOBS. IT'S A WORLD WHERE WORK IS NOT RELATED TO SATISFYING OUR NEEDS, WORLD WHERE WORK IS ONLY RELATED TO SATISFYING THE PROFIT NEEDS OF BUSINESS. THIS COUNTRY WAS NOT BUILT BY THE HUGE CORPORATIONS OR GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACIES. IT WAS BUILT BY PEOPLE WHO WORK. AND, IT IS WORKING PEOPLE WHO SHOULD CONTROL THE WORK TO BE DONE. YET, AS LONG AS EMPLOYMENT IS TIED TO SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROFITS, THE WORK WONT GET DONE.
the Black Panthers were right
LLMs do not understand, will not understand, and cannot ever understand information. It's a glorified search engine combined with auto-compete, and you should treat it as such. No matter how much LLM companies try to tell you their machines can think or reason, they cannot and will not.

A valentine from Public Health of Seattle and King County. A man shivers in bed while a smiling lady in a red mask shows off her bandage on her arm. Text: Noses are red Ice packs are blue I'm vaxed so miss me with severe symptoms of flu.
A valentine from Public Health of Seattle and King County. Two lady scientists shrug lackadaisically. Text reads: My love for you can't be explained by science. Just like the new federal vaccine guidelines.
A valentine from Public Health of Seattle and King County. Protesters in Minneapolis wear thick clothes and hold signs of support for immigrant neighbors. Text reads: To the health departments in the Twin Cities: Love unites us. Our hearts are with you.
Oh my GOD King County Public Health is just wilding out for Valentines Day (and a lovely one).
Found an additional graphic that gets even more of these quotes together.
I've kept "I hate myself, I hate clover, and I hate bees" pinned above my desk since I first started studying evolutionary biology as an undergraduate. So relatable to get extremely frustrated with your study system.
A digital illustration of an attempt to make a fake illuminated manuscript. Thereβs a fancy illuminated drop capital M. Lots of medieval-type ornamentation, a little illustration in the corner of a rabbit with a battle ax having some sort of confrontation with a little bipedal lizard thing that has an arm instead of a neck and head which is holding a dagger. Thereβs an orange dragonish beast wrapped around the top of everything and lettering done in some kind of fanciful script reading βMaybe it will happen todayβ
Iβve caught glimpses of a decent aurora once, nowhere near this spectacular, but the thing that struck me most was that the light flowed in a way that was very conspicuously NOT like a liquid but like electricity. It felt like being inside one of those plasma globe lamps. Eerie and breathtaking.
"if we abolish ICE how will we handle undocumented immigrants" well I'm ineligible to run for office for so, so many reasons but I've got a step-by-step plan for anyone who needs it:
1. help them get some documents
Image taken in Lofoten, Norway π³π΄ just few days ago.
If you want to read this aging lady werewolf story, it's at @strangehorizons.bsky.social. I'm so happy Gladys found a home there, and that her story is resonating with folks! strangehorizons.com/wordpress/fi...
This is top one or two photos in total so I went to do some light editing to balance the raw image out. The shorty owl πͺΆ just flying across in front of us maybe 75 ft was truly a blast to watch and shoot πΈ. I was told afternoon was better cause backlight is βworseβ but I have to disagree a bit
Here is a video of a frozen creek that had begun to thaw, and the water was flowing beneath the thin ice on top. I took this because it was soothing and wonderfully bloopy and I wanted to listen to it for hours. You are all welcome to enjoy it, too. Let your brain settle here and rest for a moment.
A composite of two stills, the crow and the moon, taken about a second apart, edited in lightroom and merged in photoshop
A single crow flies in front of the 97.8% waxing gibbous moon tonight. πͺΆ
Well done, maverick-ornithography, wherever you are.

A forlorn landscape of layered rocks in the foreground, with hills fading into the background haze. At upper top right, a small crescent moon, and a bright star.
Open up this picture fully.
Then look at the surface of Mars.
Then look up to the top right.
Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.
Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.
That's Earth.
My favorite thing I did on Bluesky has to be THE LORD OF THE RINGS threads.
THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING:
OH THANK GOD.
The innkeeper isn't the bad guy in the story, he's a *good guy* in the story. He *doesn't have room in his inn* and then *finds a spot for Mary anyway*. And this act of kindness is why Jesus is born in a manger -- warm, dry, safe, surrounded by people that love him -- instead of out in the desert
Just had a discussion with my aunt about her orange cat:
AUNT: Well, you know, he was born with a condition.
ME: Orange?
AUNT: He was born with two conditionsβ
As a dog example, sometimes a doggy DNA test will come back with "village dog." Much more common outside the US.
Village dog means your dog has NO breed in it. They are descended from generations of dogs of no breed mixing.
97-99% of cats can be thought of as "village cats"
A chart showing that 97-99% of all cats are breedless, with pure bred selection only starting 150 years ago at best.
So, what breed IS your cat?
None.
(None breed, left beef.)
Wha? How?
Cat breeds are just NEW. Despite them living with us for thousands of years, we only have about 40-150 years of cat breeds existing, and they aren't out mixing with random cats.
97-99% of cats are breedless!
A Blue Jay giving a mid-flight glance over his/her shoulder while showing those beautiful blue feathers.
GOOSEFISH
This picture has been making the rounds again, and is being misidentified again.
This is a GOOSEFISH.
This is NOT a tasselled wobbegong shark.
Itβs a great pic. I get why people are very excited about it. But itβs as easy to give it the right name as the wrong one.

OMG it just took out one of the distant cameras!!
After Hattie died at only one years old, I have reminded myself that animals don't think about the future. If today was a good day, if yesterday was a good day, they are happy. They live in the moment. And even if that life is short, if it's full of good days, they don't know it could be longer.
Okay, the crowd going nuts like someone just scored a touchdown at the Super Bowl all *through* the KDH performance is a hell of a thing to see hear/see:
"Let me get this straight. Your lab has bred a dragon?"
"A wyvern, director. It has two legs, two wings, whereas a-"
"Which flies, breathes fire, and is intelligent?"
"About as intelligent as a border collie."
"So, intelligent. Why?"
"You asked us to invent measures to take down small drones."
