LLMs can unmask pseudonymous users at scale with surprising accuracy Pseudonymity has never been perfect for preserving privacy. Soon it may be pointless.

She’d Never Changed Her Gender Marker. Kansas Invalidated Her License Anyway. β€” Assigned A trans Kansas resident recently changed her name but not her gender marker on her license, fearing what Kansas may do if she did. The Kansas DMV still flagged her ID.

This story, from @natezuke.bsky.social, is absolutely wild. A trans woman who never changed her gender marker was issued a letter invalidating her license. At the DMV they cut up her license, which had an "M" marker.

Anyway, I say this to say I've been thinking a lot lately about James Gunn's Superman, the latest reboot of the film franchise. I saw it when it released in theaters last year, and, predictably, by the end, I had shed more than a few years. I didn't understand why until this weekend, when I was having some Outdoor Beers[1] with a couple friends. The plot of the film is pretty simple: Superman saves some people who need saving, and eventually, emotionally, saves himself. (It really is worth watching.)

But the reason I had such a strong reaction to this Superman, despite it being a lot like every other superhero film, was ultimately pretty simple: it felt radical to see a man with so much power could decide to use it for good. That someone β€” even a fictional someone β€” could believe that goodness was a thing worth sacrificing for, worth working to protect.
