1908: the Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals, calls for 18 age limit on reading in bed amidst a moral panic surrounding children becoming "addicted" to novels, which were "designed to keep kids hooked" and destroy their attention/mental health

Greater Lincolnshire to cut ESOL from 2027, mayor confirms Greater Lincolnshire’s mayor will press ahead with plans to scrap publicly funded ESOL courses, despite consultation responses opposing the move.

Reform: How dare people call us racist, we just want people to integrate.

Also Reform: Let's actively cut the mechanisms which make it easier for people to integrate.

Cutting ESOL courses is a bloody stupid, and racist, idea when we should be increasing them.

Lol, yup. Especially when expecting people to buy tickets before artists are announced means they're relying on the Eurovision brand...

Just checking, it's now ok to flee your homeland, because you're afraid for your safety, and seek refuge in another Country?

Glad we've cleared that up. Let's hear no more about immigration and refugees then.

β€˜Carnage of concern and upset’: Women’s Institute groups close after transgender ban Members warn NFWI decision has opened up toxic culture that deters younger women from joining

In a completely predictable turn of events, anti-trans ideology has a negative impact on other people.
Guaranteed this will be used by gender critical activists to claim trans individuals are bullying.
Reality is most people just don't support discrimination.

In news that will surprise absolutely nobody. One assumes those 'unforeseen challenges' are that they've sold fuck all tickets, which is a challenge everyone had foreseen except for the people organising this.

I've never before been at a club night that played The Devil Went Down to Georgia and 5678 back to back, and I'm sure I never will again. Experiences to be treasured

I really hope people advocating to ban kids from SM read this. Some kids are isolated by disabilities or circumstances. Furthermore, some kids grow up in abusive households. β€œIdeally, a child’s exposure to online worlds should be moderated by their parents” isn’t a reassuring sentiment for everyone

Striking numbers which demonstrate, in spades, how tiny is the popular support for the culture of hate that Britain's institutions seem determined to impose on a kind and accepting majority.

(Expect the BBC to ignore it or qualify it to oblivion.)

Loving that the key reason James lost this game is that he couldn't stop interrupting people. Jade never thought he was a traitor, she just voted against him because she was sick of being interrupted all the time #TheTraitors

But in putting in place what's needed for it to be a success (i.e. guaranteeing you can get the popular acts from this year's contest), you're potentially shooting the actual contest in the foot.

Anyway, this comes from a grump who was almost certainly never going to go to this tour anyway.

15.01.2026 19:22 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

On the surface, the tour actually sounds like it might be a good idea - it's capitalising in high fan interest in the artist, among a growing demographic with disposable income who enjoy going to concerts (as seen in several acts' successful tours post-contest).

15.01.2026 19:22 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

We already know Olly pulled out of Eurovision last year because it clashed with his own, more lucrative tour. And that was only for a two-week commitment - imagine if he'd been confronted with a two-month commitment.

15.01.2026 19:22 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

You're essentially asking them to block two months out of their calendars, without any guarantee of work for most of that period (since only ten will be chosen for the tour). I can't think of any freelancer who'd commit to a two-month 'job' for which they might only be given work for two weeks of it

15.01.2026 19:22 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

They're committing to two months (early May to early July) where they can't schedule any other work - concerts, live appearances etc. - and that's without any guarantee they'll actually be chosen to do the tour.

15.01.2026 19:22 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Artists participating in this year's Eurovision Song Contest will be contractually required to go on the Eurovision tour, if selected for it (ten of them will be). Which sounds like an excellent way of discouraging any artist with a successful career from participating in the contest.

I am once again reminding you all that the UK government introduced an Online Safety Act that is effectively a porn ban on most adult porn websites, but is dithering over banning a website that is actually creating child porn.

This is a brilliant summary of the situation in the UK, but it could apply almost any place the government is promising to "crack down on immigration."

Folks, I am in need of recommendations - I want to buy my daughter a bass guitar for Xmas. Have about Β£200 to spend, is there any chance of getting anything decent for this or should I be saving up some more? And will she need a separate bass amp rather than the guitar amp she currently has? πŸ™
