Some were because of UA, other were pure hallucinations
That's the whole point of the question and how GA treats sessions. Even if the user comes from a different source during an active session, the session is also not started. This is very similar to as if a visitor came to the site directly again in the middle of session
User comes from Google > User comes from Instagram > Closes tab > opens a new browser tab and enters your website's address. This could be an example of coming directly.
Use less of "Artificial" and more of "Human" intelligence :) Then PhD becomes optional

Now, we have a different version of Google Analytics, but the same myth: that if an event (e.g., user_engagement) fires before a pageview in GA4, it will cause the Landing page to be not set
Not true. I have run several tests to prove that point.

Time to bust a myth.
We had something similar in Universal Analytics when people believed that if you have any event tracked before page view (in the same session), this will cause “not set” landing page. Simo debunked that a while ago.
