The finished headscarf! The indigo is a tradition of the Tuareg people (like Ousmane, the OC I threw into this historical AU to fit @taplingzines.bsky.social queer history zine), and the color was so rich and fun to paint

Oh that is lovely!
A cropped digital illustration of two masculine Native American characters kissing. One with arm tattoos leans over to kiss the nose of one sitting on the ground. The one sitting wears a purple arm band and a white bead necklace, and holds a basket of corn with the purple Haudenosaunee flag woven into the design.

I visited Kyoto, Japan, this year to photograph the Sakura season--Japanese cherry trees in bloom. This painting captures the view from Philosopher's Path, a winding walkway of large stones that traverses the width of Kyoto. The path follows a water-filled canal, and cherry trees overhang the entire walkway. This painting captures the peaceful beauty of cherry trees at dusk. Queer lives have changed and shifted in and out of the public eye of their cultures throughout all of history.
With my piece I wanted to show that some were (and still are!) hiding, but that doesn't make them any less valid or reduces their queer joy however private it might be.

We are looking straight down the middle of the Great Hall. In the centre is a series of large oak posts which look like they are branching out and up holding the soaring roof above. There is a lot of wood, fit for woodnesday.

Wow, thank you so much!
Ha, thank you! Hmm, well, in those days the travel could be quite dangerous, and fasting while doing it especially so! She spent five years preparing by living ascetically, and then after touring the major sites in Palestine, she joined a community of hermit nuns in the Jordan desert.

A Greek nun holds the hand of a man on the deck of a ship in a storm. Their clothes and the ropes of the ship are blowing in the wind, waves crash behind them, and they are lit up as if lightning has just struck nearby. Paraskevi looks encouraging while the man looks shellshocked but hopeful. Golden Byzantine saintsβ icons hang from around their necks and glitter in the light.
Here's my newest Women of 1000 piece! This is Paraskevi, also known as St Parascheva. She was a Byzantine hermit nun who defied her parents to live an ascetic life and travelled to the Holy Land as a pilgrim.

Call for Papers: Performing Evil, The Mediation and Display of Diabolic Spectres, 1700-2000 (4/5 June 2026, Leuven). This conference explores the tangled histories of supernatural, diabolic evil and all kinds of spectral apparitions in the last three centuries. Specifically, it is interested in how and why ghosts, spirits and related apparitional phenomena were framed as diabolic, demonic or malign manifestations from the afterlife. This conference is an initiative of Fabula Velata, a growing international and interdisciplinary research network for the historical study of occult performance. We hope to foster new connections between scholars working across history, performance studies, religious studies, media studies and related fields. Send abstracts (c.250 words) and bios (c.100 words) to kristof.smeyers@kuleuven.be before 21 March 2026. Please do get in touch if you have any questions.
Just seen this ace CfP from the excellent @kristofsmeyers.bsky.social. Slightly regretting that I'm already booked at a conference at the same time.

Extreme Long shot but, if anyone visited the Permanent Exhibition at the National Museum of Finland between 1995-2016 and has any pictures of the interpretation panels/display/presentation of the Suontaka sword then I'd be extremely grateful for copies!
Many thanks!

Thank you! I loved looking through all the different pieces. So many thought-provoking ones.
Self-portrait in coloured pencil, ink and Posca pen. A pale face is split in half, with one half turned 45 degrees to the side. Sand comes out of the mouth. A metal clamp is around the neck, and the breathing tube is illustrated red. There are swirls in the woman's eyes and dark circles under her eyes. Two large purple hands float around her and one turns half of her head to the side. A migraine aura is represented above her head as a black diamond with glittering white dots. Around her are laughing people, nonsensical voices, musical notes, and a merry go round.
Meg Hyland. Weβll never know what happened. 2025. Coloured pencil, ink, Posca pen.
Named after what my doctor said when I tried to get help after the experience.
I'm excited to be included in this online exhibition of self-portraits by disabled women!
Mine was inspired by the worst migraine I ever had in my life, which happened last October when I tried medical marijuana. (Yeah, turns out I'm allergic to weed...)
