I will confess, I'm not 100% in love with every change made to the original. Some stuff feels tacked on, and some just feels like it's there to screw with your expectations if you played the OG (which makes it all the more baffling why Capcom didn't want to make the OG available for a good while).

Also goes without saying that there's some shit, particularly pertaining to Alfred Ashford, that has NOT aged well. So, uh... potential transphobia and DID content warnings on this one. Not to mention heavily implied incest.

Yeah, this game's a damn storm if you're not ready for it.

RESIDENT EVIL 0 (2002)

Oof, torn on this one. I think they tried something really novel with the partner system and there are some very effective moments, but some of the retcons feel pretty half baked and item management is more tedious than it's ever been. Still like it, but I get why some don't.

RESIDENT EVIL [REMAKE] (2002)

It's not without reason that this is considered one of the best remakes of all time. Huge QOL improvements without diminishing the challenge, massive boost to the spookiness of the atmosphere, and Lisa Trevor is an unforgettable pursuer. Outstandingly crafted.

RESIDENT EVIL - CODE: VERONICA (2000)

Do you love backtracking? Code: Veronica is here to TEST that. CV manages some nice atmospheric eeriness despite the modeled environs, but it's hard to deny that once again, playing as Chris is a bit of a slog compared to Claire, and this time, it's mandatory.

RESIDENT EVIL 3: NEMESIS (1999)

While it does feel a bit like a step back from 2 in terms of horror effectiveness and pacing, RE3 is still a wild ride, and the different choices you can make in key moments give it some great replay value. Ammo crafting is fun and Nemesis is intimidating as hell.

RESIDENT EVIL 2 (1998)

Now we're talking. RE2 was improvements across the board. In 1, Chris' campaign was considerably less compelling than Jill's, but both Leon and Claire's stories in 2 bring some real meat to the table, with only occasionally awkward VA and memorable moments unique to each.

RESIDENT EVIL (1996)

There may be elements of the original RE1 that haven't aged super well from a modern perspective, but it's still a super fun, solid experience all around, and you just can't say no to those classic lines. Recommended, even with the remake available.

Below are reviews of each of the games as I've been playing them.

The others before it, many of which were first time playthroughs for me, I went through all on Easy. I don't think I can justify that with 4, I've played it too many times even just on Normal.

I've been running through the Resident Evil games in release order (including classic versions of games that have had remakes) and it's weird circling back to RE4, which is the first one of these I ever beat entirely myself.

9 and 10 were good, but I wanted something that moved the series forward, not back. 11 was great and almost exactly what I wanted in that regard. Then came seven years of nothing but collections.

How it feels to be a Mega Man fan at any almost any given point in the last two decades:

Mega Man 11 was a Union game, and had a Union contract and all its protections.

This means at some point Capcom actively chose to go back on a standard that had already been set and go BACK to NU (with no ENFORCEABLE protections).

Federal agents are now restricted from using tear gas and other chemical or projectile munitions against peaceful protestors and freelance journalists near the ICE processing center in Portland.

worth remembering, David Lynch directed “fix your hearts or die” specifically at transphobes. it wasn’t a generic “no mean people allowed” statement, it was said by his Twin Peaks character in defense of a trans woman he cared for and deeply respected.

If you’re a fan/consumer, I implore you to think about why a company that already agreed to SAG-AFTRA’s reasonable requests would suddenly opt to not want to adhere to them anymore.

If you’re a fellow actor - please think very, very carefully about what this means if you choose to audition for it.

It's my hope that Capcom changes their mind. If lower-to-non-existent-budget games can sign a union contract, there's frankly no reason Capcom can't.

Just putting this out there...

For big companies it's really not even really expensive for them to make a project union.

It's more about agreeing to protection terms for workers and actors that they're avoiding. Not cost.
