In 2023, Canada helped lead a new international agreement to protect 30% of the planet’s lands and waters by 2030. While important progress has been made, Canada needs to do more to reach its conservation goals at home—especially when it comes to the ocean.

The ocean covers 70% of our planet and teems with life; some still waiting to be discovered.

Countless creatures rely on ocean habitats to survive (yes, that includes us!)

On World Wildlife Day, we celebrate the incredible life beneath the waves & the vital role the ocean plays in all our lives.

When properly created and managed, MPAs can actually help protect the fishery. By protecting habitats and giving fish space to recover, MPAs can help rebuild fish populations and increase catches.

Another one of the many benefits of Marine Protected Areas: Increasing tourism dollars in coastal communities.

Protected areas can lead to more & better tourism opportunities, as seen in the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park. 🚣

Provincial action needed on nature protection commitments Send a letter to the provincial ministers responsible urging them to work together to accelerate the creation of new protected areas in the Newfoundland and Labrador.

(2/2) The decision abruptly ended a collaborative, evidence-based process designed to explore conservation alongside sustainable economic opportunity. ⠀

Send a letter urging decision-makers to reconsider and support a path forward for the South Coast NMCA: action.cpaws.org/page/186023/...

This #GlobalTourismResilienceDay, we’re thinking about the South Coast fjords of Newfoundland, a place of extraordinary natural beauty, deep cultural connections, and ecological importance.

Following NL’s decision to cancel the MOU for a feasibility study, many voices have expressed concern. (1/2)

🌿 Seagrass, salt marshes & kelp forests shelter marine life, protect coasts, and store carbon. In 2023, Canada’s coastal ecosystems sequestered 858 kt of carbon (Arctic 497, Pacific 222, Atlantic 139). Wetlands link land & ocean, supporting biodiversity, coastal communities & climate resilience.

Canada’s oceans and coastal areas are beautiful AND valuable. 🌊
In 2023, ecosystem services from our ocean provided $7.1B in benefits for Canadians, from carbon storage to seafood and nature-based experiences.

As we look towards 2026, we celebrate the significant work of rights holders, communities, industry and civil society in keeping up momentum on meaningful ocean protection.

With 4 years to go and just under 15% to protect, we have all hands on deck and wind in our sails as we start this new year.

On the longest night of the year, we celebrate the turning of the tide and return of the light!

Even in the depths of winter, life beneath the ocean's surface is wide awake, from the kelp forests of the Pacific to the icy waters of the Arctic.

Happy solstice!

Good news! Endangered bottlenose whales in the Gully MPA are growing in number after decades of decline. Their friendliness toward boats made them easy targets for whaling. By the mid-2000s their population had declined to 130, but after 20 yrs of protection they're up to 210. https://bit.ly/3YiCH82

COP30 overlooked the deep ocean, protecting it must be a priority The Maldivian government reopened gulper shark fishing, carving a species-level exemption that weakens both protections and reputations.

"Climate action begins in the deep. We cannot stabilise the climate without a healthy deep ocean. It has absorbed 90% of the excess heat and stored over 30% of the CO2 generated by humanity since the Industrial Revolution."

🔹The ocean’s critical role in regulating the climate and sustaining life.
🔹The necessity of federal government leadership to achieve these goals
🔹The acknowledgement that conservation is not just a percentage on a map, but is a part of recognizing and respecting the rights of Indigenous people.

To truly deliver on the 30x30 Global Biodiversity Framework goals, sustained funding & federal leadership will be essential.

The report reinforces why this work matters. It highlights:
🔹The urgency of ocean protection in the face of dual biodiversity and climate crises.
