Got to be the don’t break my love / why didn’t you save me 10”, think it was 2012, maybe even a record store day special. The live show round this time had really evolved a step from the Space is Only Noise tour too. What a guy.

I wasn't part of the live band, but there is this one very late 2000's quality camera phone recording of them playing it out the soundsystem at Koko:

I remember having a good time trying to recreate this acid bassline bit before the final drop. We just DI'd straight out of a homemade fuzz pedal

Adrian Utley from Portishead played the cop-theme-car-chase wah-wah guitar, and riffing on that, Dad asked me to listen to King Curtis and play a Jerry Jemmott line

Did a big thing and sold my P-Bass yesterday. Haven't used it for years, and it will go to a good friends studio. It's for the best.

But here's a good memory of playing it, on dad's cover of an acid anthem, Mickey Finn's Foghorn 1992 Remix of Egyptian Empire's Horn Track: youtu.be/GvpJdNg7zNw?...

Through radiometric calibration we found the exposure regime needed to get an SNR>100, enough to pick out the kinds of subtle (~3% band depth) absorption features we might find at Phobos

We built it out of ISO-6 compliant materials, so we've been able to take into the best room in the world - the JAXA Extraterrestrial Sample Curation Centre - to image samples of Ryugu and Bennu!

Loros: laboratory simulations of the Optical RadiOmeter Composed of CHromatic Imagers (OROCHI) experiment of the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission - Progress in Earth and Planetary Science The Laboratory OROCHI Simulator (LOROS) is an emulator of the Optical RadiOmeter composed of CHromatic Imagers (OROCHI), a multispectral and multiview imaging system for the Japan Aerospace Exploratio...

We built a simulator of OROCHI for the MMX mission, so we can prepare for multispectral imaging at Phobos from the lab.

The paper is out now in the MMX special issue of Progress in Earth & Planetary Science:

You will of course eventually lose your hearing but you’ll have really enjoyed doing the washing up

If you get one of these Bluetooth transmitters and plug it into your hifi output you can listen to your music without any phone/laptop volume limiting trickery and you will feel like you’re listening to The Bends for the first time in your life

Had a warm return to Rikkyo University, Tokyo, this summer on a Daiwa Foundation grant, this time looking at images of asteroid Bennu captured by the Laboratory OROCHI Simulator in prep for MMX

On the way back from EGU I stopped by the Ries Crater and helped out with some AUPE (Aberystwyth University PanCam Emulator) image processing with the Canadian and UK space agencies. We took a lot of pictures of pre- and post-impact clays in prep for ExoMars Rosalind Franklin

Back in May I cycled to EGU in Vienna, and gave a talk about the Supervised Spectral Parameter Learning method we've been developing, and have been applying to the CaSSIS multi-band imager on the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter

Day 11 of cycling London-> Vienna for EGU2925: the last day! Grateful for blue skies this morning. Took a side quest finding breakfast by the abbey at Melk, didn’t hit the road till noon and ran straight into a mighty headwind. Last few ks into Vienna were in land and got the speed back. I made it!

Day 10 of cycling London->Vienna for EGU2025: rain all day from Linz to Melk. Found an old warm lunch stop in Grein, and the owner told me I need to go back up river to the bridge and take the south bank. Was a good move - nice views of the built up north bank I was avoiding. 🤞 for ⛅️ 🚲 into Vienna

Day 9 of cycling London->Vienna for EGU2025: rain to start the day and sodden gravel. Got drier towards Obernzell where I caught a ferry across the river into Austria. Big valley walls of forest either side, and the track followed the waters edge. Very gradual downslope most of the way down to Linz

On the way into dest. Vilshofen there was a nice scale trail over the solar system, all mounted on rocks with little plaques (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Earth + Moon)

Day 8 of cycling to EGU2025 Vienna from London: Day 1/4 of the Danube - the last stretch! Skipped from Mainz to lovely Regensburg by train on my off day. 20C no wind and super smooth eurovelo 6 track, but it’s mostly inside the banks so not much view of the big blue. Played Joni’s Blue all the way.
