While Steel Empire has seen a remake, the 16-bit original still has my heart. This is one of those shmups that I'd recommend to anyone new to the genre. It's health meter + lives system and Cave-levels of slowdown make it easy to get into.
Steampunk AF too.

Don't ask how Dahna lost to a guy with one arm and no head(s).
Dahni - Megami Tanjou on the Mega Drive has a neato dark fantasy look, but I don't know if I'd ever recommend sinking a bunch of time into it. Some tweaks - like restoring Dahna's health between stages - would've done the game some good.

Next Sega Genesis game review is most likely Alien Storm.
It's about busting aliens and feeling good.
Features include cool robot, awesomely overpowered dash-attacks, and a useless final boss straight out of Gradius.

The Genesis port of Alien Storm has some extras, like this laboratory stage.
Maybe it's wrong, but I always take a moment to destroy every brain in a jar I see.

One of the most essential tools is that you can control the direction you throw enemies. Use this to knock down nearby foes and do extra damage.
The downward stab is the strongest move, though predictably harder to land.
Enemies can and will fall into pits with little effort. Just don't do what I did and leave yourself open to getting knocked into that same pit.
You can't have a Golden Axe game without impressive magic effects, like this dragon scorching everyone.
Golden Axe 2 is a fine entry in the Sega Genesis series. A bit of a learning curve here, as you'll spend an inordinate amount of time "leading" adversaries around just to create an opportunity to land a hit. Throw enemies at their buddies or into pits whenever possible.

If I believed the SNES version was good, I would've tried to replay it at least once in the past few decades.
Yeah, but IIRC it's just a dub right now.
It's still early, but I've noticed that the Sega Genesis port of Ys 3 plays very well. I went in expecting a lot of hitbox funkiness and grinding, but that's not really the case. The first couple bosses can be easily defeated at level 3.
Also, down-stabs kick butt as they should.

I seriously didn't plan on playing the Sega Genesis version of Ys 3 literally one year after the Turbografx CD version.
Also, talking Adol alert.
I had to see the experience glitch in the Mega Drive version of Ys 3 for myself.
1. Spend all of Adol's gold to buy an amulet.
2. Go to Tigre Mine's 2nd screen.
3. Use the amulet 3 times (leave and return so enemies respawn)
4. Max level and cash.

Yeah, she needed more specials with cancellable recovery.
From what I've read, SB1 is a rough first outing for almost the entire cast, but they all get huge buffs and find their niche in SB2.
Not familiar with SB1, but Nouhime tends to do her best work at long-range, eliminating bosses before they get anywhere near her.
If she has it in this game, try her charged shot (hold square). It travels an immense distance and chews through crowds.
