Seeing ghosts from undergrad Watching another American president drag the world to war

Been thinking a bunch lately about my undergrad years when a different American president was spreading lies to justify a war in the Middle East. open.substack.com/pub/foundtim...

Ottawa MP calls for β€˜meaningful flexibility’ for public servants in new return-to-office mandate An Ottawa Liberal MP is calling on the federal government to exercise β€œmeaningful flexibility” when implementing its return-to-office policy for public servants this summer.

It's great to see federal MPs speaking up against a bad policy that costs more and creates less.

But where were the provincial MPPs in Ontario when an even worse policy (i.e., 5-day RTO) was mandated? www.ctvnews.ca/ottawa/artic... #onpoli

Graphic titled β€œ5 Reasons First-Past-the-Post Destabilizes Minority Governments and Why Proportional Representation Works Better.” The design lists five numbered sections in colored bars.

1 Winner take all culture: first-past-the-post treats politics as a fight for total control, discouraging cooperation in minority Parliaments.

2 Seat distortion magnifies small shifts: a few ridings can dramatically change power, raising the stakes of confidence votes.

3 False majority temptation: polling at 35% to 40% can translate into a majority, incentivizing early elections.

4 Proportional representation normalizes cooperation: majorities are unlikely so parties plan negotiation and agreements.

5 Collapse rarely delivers total control: bringing down a government in proportional systems rarely hands one party full power.

Minority governments are not the problem.

The problem is a system where 35% to 40% of the vote can turn into total control. That incentive fuels early elections and brinkmanship.

Proportional representation removes the jackpot and rewards cooperation instead.

For All Its Faults: Remembering the New Canadian Library The flawed-but-canonical series is dead, apparently.

I never would have sought out these stories were it not for the format. The compact design, low cover price, and wide availability were key for my access to Can lit.

NCL had its issues -- some are covered here by @brianbusby.bsky.social: www.notesandqueries.ca/essays/for-a...

Pour one out for the mass-market format.

I was a fickle reader as a kid. Once I had decided to pursue an English lit degree, I started picking up books from McClelland & Stewart's New Canadian Library series.

They eventually went to trade paperback, but the earlier, mass-market style was better.
