i think they might be too simple an answer to the problem, but the modal double faced lands are a good example of this i think. you're never too unhappy to see them b/c when you flood they're a generically good spell and when you're screwed they're a land

i feel it. i think the number one problem mtg runs into with lands is that games that came out after it with similar elements had ways to deal with mana screw, whereas mtg has to awkwardly tack them into its system and is still kinda figuring out what a good rate for that is

what's fun about mega man's slide by the way is that it means you sometimes need to move horizontally to duck something, which is a lot more interesting than just being able to duck i think. oddly as i ponder this i notice sonic arguably has the same element in the spin dash

next platformer/action game i make i need to include a horizontal movement option. mm's slide is a great fusion of dash and duck and i've experimented enough with vertical movement at this point i think
