How the Rise of a Salty Blob Led to the Fall of the Last Ice Age - Eos Scientists have long suspected that high salinity levels in the deep ocean were responsible for keeping carbon dioxide locked away during the last ice age. New research finds the strongest evidence…

It’s salty. It’s full of carbon. Its upwelling may have helped end the last ice age. It’s…the salty blob!

Bacteria Decide the Ocean’s Dissolved Organic Carbon Abundance - Eos Dissolved organic carbon prevalence follows from how many bacteria are around to eat it, modeling suggests.

It’s not what you have, it’s how you use it—even when it comes to the distribution of dissolved organic carbon in the ocean. The type of DOC is less important than how many bacteria are around to eat it, modeling suggests.

Submesoscale Stirring Drives Lateral Dispersion and Vertical Exchange in a Cyclonic Mesoscale Eddy

New in JGR: Oceans: Submesoscale Stirring Drives Lateral Dispersion and Vertical Exchange in a Cyclonic Mesoscale Eddy By Cao et al. 2026

Oceanic mesoscale eddies are often thought to have coherent structures that trap water in their cores.🌊

However, a new study shows that smaller-scale motions, known as submesoscale stirring, can disrupt this coherence.

You know how antacids can take a while to start working? New research finds that calcium carbonate minerals—the ocean’s version of antacids—might work on faster timescales than scientists realized.🧪🌊
