This weekend the Grand Illusion (167 Republican St.) in Seattle will honor the late, great Robert Duvall. On Saturday at 11 a.m. they’ll show 1983’s “Tender Mercies,” while on Sunday at 7 p.m., they’ll show his underrated 1997 film “The Apostle.”

It’s March 6, 1910, in Spokane, and the Washington Theatre is showing some unidentified motion pictures as part of a vaudeville bill. And one of the acts is L.A. Street, billed as "Europe's cleverest rubber ball manipulator."

Street was a juggler, most likely, but that’s quite a title...

On March 3, 1923, actress Nell Shipman appears at Seattle’s Blue Mouse Theatre to promote her film “The Grub Stake.” The visit included a promotion that had Seattleites combing the city looking for a mysterious man who gave away gold coins those identifying him.

On March 2, 1902, actor Henry B. Walthall – later a D.W. Griffith stalwart – plays the Seattle Theatre in the stage play “Monte Cristo.” Walthall played his week at the Seattle, but when the company came back a few weeks later, he was no longer with the troupe, having been sacked.

On Feb. 14, 1910, future Hollywood actor/director James Cruze comes to Seattle’s Orpheum Theatre in a one-act vaudeville playlet called “On Stony Ground.” Cruze’s only known stage appearance in the Northwest, he plays a vaudeville bill that also featured future screen comedienne Polly Moran.

It’s Feb 14, 1920, in Olympia, WA, and the Ray Theatre is showing Tom Mix in “The Speed Maniac.” It's a typical Mix western that manages to incorporate auto racing AND boxing – because it’s important to hit every genre at once. The film is playing with the Mack Sennett comedy “A Ladies’ Tailor.”
