Ah the joys of Friday. Good work day, early dinner date night β€œwho doesn’t want to be in soft pants at 8:00 pm?” Team USA advances to the men’s hockey gold medal round. Daughter has her friends over. And I have some time to do some creative work. Life is good.

Decalogue - Futility Closet Jonathan Franzen’s β€œ10 rules for novelists”: The reader is a friend, not an adversary, not a spectator. Fiction that isn’t an author’s personal adventure into the frightening or the unknown isn’t worth writing for anything but money. Never use the word then as a conjunction β€” we have and for this purpose. Substituting then is the lazy or tone-deaf writer’s non-solution to the problem of too many ands on the page. Write in third person unless a really distinctive first-person voice offers itself irresistibly. When information becomes free and universally accessible, voluminous research for a novel is devalued along with...

Souped-Up CRISPR Gene Editor Replicates and Spreads Like a Virus The self-spreading CRISPR tool increased editing efficiency roughly three-fold compared to older versions.

Researchers led by Nobel winner Jennifer Doudna have developed β€œNANITE”—a gene-editing tool that mimics viruses to replicate and spread to neighboring cells.

I know its being sold as a good thing, but … β€œself-spreading” sounds scary.

Nile Rodgers, Bonnie Raitt and John Squire on the Fender Stratocaster How did a radio repair man make an instrument so sublime that it makes giants of music weep with reverence? As the Fender Stratocaster turns 70, we explore its extraordinary life

Britain’s Story: The Next Chapter - BBC Royal Charter Review, Green Paper and public consultation

This is the Gov looking for your input on the BBC. It takes a while to complete (15/20 mins) but it’s pretty comprehensive and covers most aspects.

Please share. I’m surprised many people haven’t seen it yet.

The SOUPErbowl was a big hit, even with snowmageddon. We got more than 2 ft (60+cm) of snow. My son lost his cellphone while playing outside, that’s going to be a pain. I’m not sure we will find it. Trying to get an old iphone to boot and change it to his profile, if I can.

My father passed away on this date in 2017. Miss you, Dad.
We are all prepped for the snowstorm, hoping we don’t lose power.
Lots of firewood to keep us warm if needed.
Lots to read, comics have been picked up!
And beer and wine and SOUPer bowl
One of our favorite traditions.

A group of researchers that formed the scientific basis of new dietary guidelines included people with financial ties to the beef and dairy industries, as well as food companies and other groups.

And cut the world in two - And see what worms are eating
