Myodocha serripes, (Olivier, 1811)

Myodocha serripes, or the long-necked seed bug, is a dirt-colored insect in the Rhyparochromidae family, common in North America,

These bugs overwinter in woodlands and migrate to fields in spring, are attracted to lights, and are generally harmless to humans.

They also exist under rocks and other natural hides like logs and fallen debris, which is where this one was found alongside many of his brothers and sisters.

"Serripes" means "saw-footed", which is where their species name originates, due to the sharp points protruding from their front legs.

They range from eastern North America, from Quebec to Florida and west to Colorado and New Mexico; Overwintering in woodlands and move to fields in spring and summer.

Most active in autumn; adults are often found near lights, and as their common name suggests, they feed on seeds, particularly those of strawberries and St. John's wort.

Right: Phidippus mystaceus, mature female
These two fellas were found on a typical collecting venture in very not so typical circumstances.

I agree! I think seeing and experiencing these insects is more than enough. Photos are a way I'm able to partly share that experience with others

I appreciate it. I have a ways to go with photography including buying equipment. I currently am actually using my phone.

Eucharitid wasps are tiny parasitic wasps which have MASSIVE structures on their thoraxes giving them sort of a "bull" or "oxen" look to them

Bushmasters are beautiful vipers that are large and highly venomous.

Peanut headed lanternflies are large bugs with funny shaped heads and striking wings!

The species groups which display their colorful abdomens and dance to attract mates, I've seen many photos online and I've always wanted to encounter some!

Oh, with that level of travel, I bet you've seen many of the animals I've wanted to meet! Many south American species, actually. Including a bushmaster, peanut headed lanternfly, and some cool Eucharitid wasps!

Haven't photographed anything from Australia. I'd love to visit. I also want to encounter those beautiful peacock jumping spiders!

In the right area, during mid and late summer, they're definitely not at all hard to find!

Below is an inat range map showing their distribution according to real life human uploads.

They're slow moving, often on leafy plants or flowers waiting for prey!

And sure, I'd love to see your photos!

Wheel bugs live across much of North America, especially east of the Rockies, in gardens, woods, and fields where prey is plentiful, from southern Canada down to Florida, Texas, and west to California, plus Mexico and Guatemala! Very wide range. I found mine in Texas!

Wasps are crucial for ecosystems!

We NEED them, and if you take a second to look at them, you may realize there's a lot more to them than you've thought

Looking at baby crab spiders under my beaverlab handheld microscope! ๐Ÿ”ฌ

The mom was found on a thistle, camouflaging well, but not well enough!

Today, I'm able to show you her beautiful young, which she guarded ever so diligently.

Vespula squamosa, (Drury, 1773)

This is a male. Saved from the cold river while I was fishing with the inline spinner it was photographed on. You can tell it's a male due to the long body with many more hairs, and longer antennae.

Best we can do is try to let them be if you want to prevent unnecessary interactions or undesirable circumstances such as a sting. Glad to see you still respect em and all. Great to hear!

Yeah we tend to associate bees with being "the good guys." And wasps the bad. Of course, this rhetoric is hardly actually true, and holds no grounds when tested ecologically.

Wasp hate is forced. Wasps are no more irritating, temperamental, or destructive than honey bees. They just have a different role to fill, and they do it well.

Now decide what role you'll play.

Like 3 Genera of wasp paint the image for all the hundreds of thousands of described and undescribed species taking care of our environment today. Polistes, Vespula, and Vespa, and I personally love all 3! People will do anything to hate though it seems.

And it's like -- Buddy... Wasps are just so absolutely crucial!

Wasps are good for controlling pests like aphids and caterpillars, pollinating flowers, and much more!

Yes! So actually, you have Plestiodon fasciatus, the Common Five-lined Skink, or the "Blue tailed skink."

I have a different species, Scincella lateralis, the Little Brown Skink.

Different species, but the same taxonomic family. Very close in size and proportions, but different animals.
